Configuring a Yandex Cloud GPU VM

In this article
THE QUICK TAKE

Choose the published platform and compatible image together. A CPU VM’s arbitrary settings do not establish a valid GPU configuration.

Create a Yandex Cloud GPU VM on a supported Compute Cloud platform with its documented combination of accelerators, vCPUs and RAM. Choose platform and GPU first, then verify quota, zone and image. Do not assume any ordinary VM accepts an arbitrary accelerator attachment.

Start with the platform

Use the GPU configuration tables to separate per-device VRAM, accelerator count and system RAM. Several GPUs’ combined memory does not automatically become one contiguous device for every application.

Document the minimum suitable configuration and a possible alternative. Validate the alternative on a small input rather than equating devices solely by total memory. Generation, device arrangement and interconnect can affect the working setup.

Select a compatible image

The GPU-VM creation guide describes GPU-oriented images and the setup sequence. A prepared image can reduce manual work if its driver and libraries suit the project. A custom image requires a separate compatibility check.

Save image identity and environment creation date. An OS family name alone does not establish the driver or dependencies. Keep the application revision, launch command and required configuration without embedding secret values.

Verify current permission and placement

The documentation describes an initially zero GPU quota and notes October 2026 changes to the scope of some Compute Cloud quotas. Check the current console row and its applicable location rather than relying on an old regional screenshot.

RequirementEvidence needed
PlatformSupports the selected GPU arrangement
ZoneSupports intended placement
QuotaCovers the requested resources
ImageCompatible with platform and driver
DataReachable through the selected disk and network

Permission does not guarantee available physical capacity. Save the exact error if creation fails so quota, compatibility and allocation can be investigated separately. Product and account eligibility should also be checked for the actual organisation and location.

Build a useful first profile

Create a small resource, verify login and accelerator visibility, and write a control result before uploading the whole dataset. Record preparation time as well as compute time, then repeat from saved configuration.

If requirements are not yet known, measure peak memory on a reproducible small input. Increasing GPU count later is a separate application and topology test, not a simple multiplication of one successful device. Preserve platform, image, disks and exit procedure so another operator can repeat the experiment without console-history guesswork.

Turn the check into a practical next step

Choose the published platform and compatible image together. A CPU VM’s arbitrary settings do not establish a valid GPU configuration.
