Several GPU VMs do not automatically make a distributed application. Verify the programme’s communication pattern, supported nodes and inter-node operation.
A Yandex Cloud GPU cluster is relevant when supported GPU VMs need InfiniBand communication for a distributed calculation. Independent jobs may only need separate instances and a queue. Creating a group of machines does not make a single-node application distributed automatically.
Identify the communication pattern
If each VM processes its own files without continual exchange, job distribution and result preservation may be the main requirements. If one calculation synchronizes several nodes, the interconnect becomes significant.
The GPU documentation describes a specific supported cluster mechanism, not a universal mode for arbitrary machines across regions. Establish the application’s need before ordering that infrastructure. Cluster terminology alone does not prove it improves the intended workload.
Check node compatibility
The add-to-cluster guide lists supported platforms, special image requirements and node configurations. At the research date it describes eight-GPU VMs on the listed platforms. Do not extend that support to an arbitrary smaller VM by analogy.
Cluster and member VMs must share the availability zone. Compatible software and network rules also matter. One manually prepared node can cause a distributed-launch failure even when the hardware objects were created correctly.
Compare the architectures
| Criterion | Independent GPU VMs | Supported GPU cluster |
|---|---|---|
| Work | Separate jobs or data portions | Distributed shared calculation |
| Connection | Project’s ordinary network design | InfiniBand between cluster nodes |
| Placement | Defined for each resource | Common cluster and VM zone |
| Programme | Can operate independently | Must support distributed execution |
| Acceptance | Individual job checks | Nodes and their interaction |
This describes mechanisms, not a measured speed ranking. The useful choice depends on the application’s actual exchange requirements.
Test before increasing scale
A team that has already verified one-node execution should preserve matching software versions, inputs and a minimal distributed example. Confirm node communication and result correctness on a small workload before expanding.
Check cluster quota separately from GPU-VM permission; the creation guide describes its own prerequisite. Record process count, distribution and library versions so the next run does not silently use a different scheme.
Also test where intermediate artifacts live and what happens if a node is lost. A cluster object in the console is infrastructure evidence, not a finished operating process. Complete the profile with preparation time, correctness and recovery assumptions, and check the actual organisation’s access conditions before depending on the product for a scheduled project.
Turn the check into a practical next step
Several GPU VMs do not automatically make a distributed application. Verify the programme’s communication pattern, supported nodes and inter-node operation.
