Assess EC2 as complete infrastructure: GPU family, regional access, networking, disks and operations. Cloud credits do not replace an estimate of costs after they expire.
Amazon EC2 rents compute instances with different accelerators. A language model needs a suitable GPU configuration: the accelerated-computing catalogue is not one uniform product with identical capabilities.
This review uses official materials as of 1 November 2026. Check current prices, availability and account terms before launch. AWS is considered a supplier of rented resources here, not a destination for private owners’ graphics cards.
Start with the task and family
The AWS accelerated-computing catalogue covers different forms of acceleration. Specify GPU, device count, memory, host resources and supported environment. A family label does not replace an individual size’s specification.
For an application already in AWS, assess proximity to data, existing network rules and team workflows. These can be organisational advantages, not proof of better speed or cost for every model.
Choose the purchase option
EC2 pricing describes different purchasing models. Compare commitment duration, interruption tolerance and availability requirements. An uncertain initial experiment and stable long-term operation start from different assumptions.
Do not apply an anticipated discount to every GPU configuration without checking eligibility. Obtain a complete estimate for region, OS and duration. If programme credits are used, show ordinary expense after support expires separately.
Include related components
Service cost does not end at the GPU line. Disks, artifact storage, data transfer, network components and support may contribute. Check what remains after stopping the instance and who tracks it.
Create a project budget and label experimental resources so spending can be linked to a test. Even a detailed bill will not explain model economics if requests, instance sizes and additional services all changed simultaneously.
Run a bounded control experiment
Suppose data already resides in AWS and a team is evaluating one open model. It chooses a compatible instance, fixes a test set and bounds the experiment’s duration. It also tests result preservation and redeployment from the documented configuration.
Report successful answers, latency, resilience and the complete launch expense. A different region or larger model requires another validation stage. One successful instance does not confirm future availability at any scale.
Compare with equipment already available
A cloud result provides a useful reference for owned infrastructure. Match model and workload, then include the owner’s power, placement and maintenance expenses. An EC2 rental price is not what a private GPU can necessarily earn.
Prepare with buying versus renting and the AWS, Google Cloud and Azure comparison.
