Fixed and Variable GPU Costs: A Working Worksheet

In this article
THE QUICK TAKE

Cost behaviour depends on the decision and billing terms; the name of an invoice line does not make it wholly fixed or variable.

Separate fixed and variable GPU costs by asking whether a payment changes when the chosen period contains no jobs. Placement fees may remain payable after the server stops, while electricity can change with operating mode. The answer depends on your billing terms and calculation boundary.

Use the worksheet to estimate a bounded pilot’s operating need. It does not forecast demand or convert technical availability into expected sales.

Choose the period and object

State whether you are costing one GPU, a complete host or several servers. Record the calendar period and any partial connection interval. Allocate a multi-period payment consistently while retaining its original invoice.

FinOps allocation describes attributing costs to defined objects. In a GPU pool those might be the machine, pilot or project. Mixing these levels makes it difficult to understand which cost really changes when another task is added.

Do not label the entire electricity bill variable inference cost. It may include baseline host operation and devices outside the workload boundary.

Calculate one hypothetical scenario

Assume a host baseline of 0.12 kW and an observed additional load of 0.35 kW. Over 100 loaded hours, the additional energy is 35 kWh. Calculate baseline energy separately using the actual powered-on hours.

These figures illustrate the method, not a typical server. Apply the tariff supported by your own bill. The EIA distinguishes power and energy; an instantaneous watt value is not itself a monthly expense.

Check for double counting

If placement already includes electricity, do not add the same power charge a second time. If administration is prepaid as a package, explain any separately recorded hours. An included label is more informative than an unexplained zero.

Preserve units, source and responsible contact for every number. Leave an unknown tariff unresolved rather than substituting a convenient average.
