Calculate the Cost of Making Your GPU Available

In this article
THE QUICK TAKE

Cost per available hour measures the resource offered, not paid utilisation, token revenue or a rental tariff.

GPU availability cost per hour is the period’s attributed operating cost divided by verified available hours. It describes what it costs to offer a resource under a defined schedule. It is not the same as cost per busy hour, a rental tariff or revenue per hour.

Choose this measure when comparing operating schedules or explaining a pilot budget. Keep demand and paid usage in separate records.

Define the denominator

State what available means: powered on, remotely reachable, required environment ready and permitted for external work. An owner reservation is not external availability. Maintenance and an outage also need distinct treatment.

Choose one calendar period and reconcile the intervals before calculating the total. If different GPUs have different schedules, identify whether the unit is a host-hour or GPU-hour. Mixing those units can change the result substantially without any real change in cost.

Define the cost boundary

Include the expenses appropriate to the decision: site payment, electricity, network, administration and agreed allocations of shared host costs. Preserve the method used for prepaid or multi-period expenses.

FinOps unit economics and allocation provide a framework for relating a defined unit to attributed cost. They do not prescribe a universal GPU rental price. A simple consistent approximation can be more useful than a detailed worksheet whose rules change every month.

Test schedule sensitivity

Period scenarioAttributed costAvailable hoursCost per available hour
Initial schedule2604000.65
Reduced availability2602001.30

The second result doubles because the denominator halves while cost remains unchanged. It does not demonstrate worsening hardware efficiency or a change in market demand.

Now investigate which costs could actually fall with a shorter schedule. If the site payment remains fixed, reducing hours may save less than expected. If the machine can be physically disconnected, the energy effect should be measured rather than assumed.

Use the measure for a bounded decision

Compare a proposed schedule with the owner’s research needs and the expenses that remain payable. Show unknown charges and any exclusions. Do not multiply the available hours by a guessed selling price and present the product as expected income.

A reproducible denominator makes both discussions more concrete and exposes the assumptions behind the budget.
