Use power multiplied by time for each operating mode; a GPU reading is not the whole server electricity bill.
GPU server electricity cost is calculated from energy used over time, with a clearly defined measurement boundary. Separate loaded operation, waiting and genuine disconnection from power. Then apply the tariff on the relevant bill and check what the hosting payment already includes.
This calculation explains one part of operating a server. It does not determine a rental price or predict demand for the equipment.
Choose the measurement boundary
Specify whether readings cover one GPU, the complete host or a rack circuit. NVIDIA SMI reports supported device metrics; its power reading does not automatically include the CPU, memory, drives and power conversion losses.
For an invoice comparison, a whole-host or site measurement may be the relevant source. Preserve meter identity, units and dates. Do not compare a brief peak with a monthly average as though they represented the same quantity.
Divide the period into operating modes
The following is a hypothetical 720-hour month. The stated averages are illustrative measurements, not typical consumption figures for a GPU model.
| Mode | Average power | Duration | Energy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loaded | 0.60 kW | 120 hours | 72 kWh |
| Waiting | 0.15 kW | 180 hours | 27 kWh |
| Disconnected from power | 0 kW | 420 hours | 0 kWh |
| Total | — | 720 hours | 99 kWh |
A machine described as stopped may still draw standby power. Only use zero when the measurement boundary and physical state justify it. Keep unknown intervals visible rather than assigning them the most convenient mode.
Apply the actual billing terms
At a hypothetical tariff of 0.12 currency units per kWh, the calculation is 99 × 0.12 = 11.88 currency units. The EIA distinguishes power from energy: watts alone are not a monthly electricity charge.
Use the rate applicable to your location, period and account. If the invoice includes additional charges, describe them separately. When power is already included in a fixed hosting payment, adding the same energy again would double count the cost.
Prepare a useful operating record
Retain the source readings, mode durations, tariff and explanation of exclusions. Compare the calculated energy with the billed boundary before calling a difference an error. Unmeasured cooling or another device on the circuit may explain part of it.
A measured resource description supports a concrete equipment discussion without requiring assumptions about future utilisation.
