Quota permits consumption but does not reserve physical GPU capacity. Match the request to the model, region and provisioning mode actually planned.
Before launching GPUs in Google Cloud, check the global GPU quota and the appropriate regional quota for the accelerator model. Standard and Spot resources use different categories. Approval authorizes consumption; it does not reserve physical capacity in the chosen zone.
Specify the exact configuration
Record machine type, GPU model, instance count and region. Use the GPU-instance documentation to confirm the supported arrangement. A request for an abstract number of GPUs does not identify the service configuration being created.
Include the expected parallel layout: one VM with several accelerators differs from several independent VMs. State the provisioning mode and checkpoint requirements. This prevents a quota request that applies to a different resource category from the intended launch.
Check the quota layers together
The allocation-quota documentation describes GPUs (all regions) and model-specific regional categories. A launch needs the relevant limits together; free capacity in one quota row does not prove every other requirement is satisfied.
| Check | Question answered |
|---|---|
| Global GPU quota | Is the overall multi-region amount permitted? |
| Regional model quota | Is this accelerator amount permitted here? |
| Provisioning category | Does the quota match the launch mode? |
| Existing usage | What is already consuming permission? |
| Dependencies | Are disks, addresses and other resources sufficient? |
Accelerator-optimized series can have their own accounting rules. Do not apply ordinary CPU-machine assumptions to every GPU series without checking its documentation.
Write a useful increase request
Include project, region, model, quantity, workload and intended start. Describe a bounded pilot or continuing use honestly. Request the volume justified by the actual plan rather than treating a large limit as evidence of a budget.
While a request is under consideration, plan against the currently confirmed amount. A submitted request is not an approved allocation or a promised start date. Keep the dependency explicit in the project’s calendar.
Separate quota from launch capacity
For two identical GPU VMs, total the accelerators and existing consumption, then verify global, regional and mode-specific limits. Only after those checks investigate the chosen zone’s physical availability.
If creation still reports an exhausted resource pool, repeating a sufficient quota increase may not help. Save the full code and parameters to distinguish permission, compatibility and physical allocation. Keep the approved value and request ID in the runbook, but refresh current usage before a later pilot because another project may have consumed part of the limit.
Turn the check into a practical next step
Quota permits consumption but does not reserve physical GPU capacity. Match the request to the model, region and provisioning mode actually planned.
