Moving a GPU VM to another region: what must move separately

In this article
THE QUICK TAKE

A region migration restores a project and its dependencies; changing a location field does not move every resource.

Plan a GPU VM region migration as the restoration of an entire project: compute, data, networking and access. Selecting another region does not automatically relocate every dependency. Confirm an eligible target GPU and quota first, then copy data and validate the application before switching users.

Confirm the target before moving data

Specify the GPU model, device count, machine type and acceptable zone. Product support, account quota and current capacity are separate checks. When the target differs from the source, run a small compatibility test before transferring the main dataset. A successful image copy alone does not reserve the required accelerator.

Compute Engine documents movement across zones and regions with conditions for associated resources. Use those conditions to build a product-specific plan, rather than assuming every GPU service supports a transparent move without interruption. Keep the source available under a defined operating state during validation.

Inventory independent dependencies

ComponentPreparation at the destination
ImageA supported copy or reproducible build
DisksSupported transfer and integrity checks
GPU quotaPermission for the intended target allocation
NetworkSubnets, rules and necessary routes
AddressesNew values and client configuration updates
SecretsManaged application access in the target environment

AWS AMIs are regional resources with their own copy process. An image present in the source region is not automatically ready to launch elsewhere. Permissions and related settings need validation too. An image may also omit the latest results on a separate volume, so describe exactly what each copy contains.

Rehearse a consistent cutover

Consider a research team moving for a suitable GPU option. It first creates a small target environment and runs a control computation. It then schedules a pause in source writes and transfers the changing results. The source becomes read-only, or enters another explicitly documented state.

Do not continue writing independently to both copies and rely on timestamps to merge them later. Define one authoritative result set and an explicit switch point. Test reading, writing and access to external dependencies from the new region; an address allowlist or region-specific service dependency may still reference the old environment.

Budget the transfer and close the source

Include cross-region traffic, elapsed transfer time and the period when both environments exist. Test a representative sample, particularly when the dataset contains many small files. Cutover time also includes permissions, application startup and client updates, not just image transfer.

Record rollback conditions before the switch. Once the destination passes acceptance, update the inventory and review remaining source disks, snapshots and addresses. Location and eligibility still need discussion for the specific deployment.
