Stopping compute does not finish the lifecycle of retained storage. Reconcile each remaining disk and its retention period separately from the Pod state.
After stopping a Runpod Pod, GPU compute charges may stop while retained storage remains billable. The disk still holds your files. To finish the expense deliberately, identify each resource and decide what to retain or remove after verifying the required copies.
List the remaining components
Pod pricing separates compute and storage. Storage rules and rates can differ by type and Pod state. Do not simply set the previous hourly total to zero after pressing Stop.
Record volume-disk capacity, independent network volumes, stopped Pods and retention periods. “The GPU is off” describes only compute. It does not explain which data continues occupying allocated storage, who needs it or when that storage should be reviewed.
Distinguish Stop from Terminate
Stop is a pause with retained volume-disk data. Terminate deletes the Pod and its associated local storage, while an independent network volume needs a separate decision. Deletion should not be used as a diagnostic shortcut for an unclear bill.
First establish what each disk contains and verify an export. Irreplaceable research results deserve different treatment from a downloadable cache. Define a retention date for each version so an unknown directory is not removed merely to reduce a total.
Model the whole calendar
Suppose a team works on four evenings but keeps data for fourteen days. Its estimate needs four compute sessions and the complete storage period. A temporary second copy created for migration adds its own lifetime.
| Interval | Compute | Storage |
|---|---|---|
| Environment preparation | Depends on running Pod time | Allocated capacity already exists |
| Pause between evenings | Depends on actual compute state | Retained disk remains a resource |
| After result export | Depends on remaining Pods | Unnecessary resources can be removed |
This is a schedule, not a tariff. Use the units, currency and rules of the selected order. Generation time alone is not necessarily all billable running time.
Reconcile the bill with resources
Save the stop time and inventory immediately afterward. Match subsequent charges to that list. An unclear charge can be investigated with resource ID, type, capacity and interval rather than a general statement about a switched-off machine.
Give stopped storage an owner and review date. A depleted balance is not a backup method. Compare the cost of retaining a recoverable environment with the measured work of rebuilding it, while preserving a separate copy of valuable outputs. The useful estimate explains both active work and waiting between sessions.
Turn the check into a practical next step
Stopping compute does not finish the lifecycle of retained storage. Reconcile each remaining disk and its retention period separately from the Pod state.
