Verify the independent volume, actual write path and recovery result. A familiar directory name is not evidence that files survive deletion of the Pod.
To retain files after deleting a Runpod Pod, use an independent network volume or export the required data beforehand. An ordinary volume disk survives a stop but is deleted with its Pod. The word persistent is therefore incomplete unless you name the storage type and the action it must survive.
Identify the resource that outlives compute
A network volume has its own lifecycle. For Pods, the documented option is available in Secure Cloud and must be selected during deployment. Its data centre constrains compatible compute placement; having a volume does not guarantee that the desired GPU is currently available there.
Record the volume ID, location and purpose outside the container. /workspace can represent different storage arrangements, so that directory alone does not prove that an independent volume is attached. A replacement Pod with a similarly named empty disk is not the same resource.
Check the actual write path
Before uploading a large dataset, create a small control file containing a timestamp and a random string. Confirm the application’s output directory, cache directory and working directory separately. Relative paths can send results somewhere other than the intended volume.
Commands such as pwd and df -h /workspace help inspect the working location and filesystem. Cross-check their result with the resource in the console. Do not identify the storage type solely from a familiar capacity or directory label.
Test a small move
Consider a researcher changing GPUs after editing a dataset. Separate original inputs, irreplaceable edits and recoverable cache. Save the program version and configuration, stop writers, and record a checksum for an important result.
Deploy the next compatible Pod with the intended volume and read the control result there. Run a small application-level check before deleting the original environment. Different volumes in different data centres do not synchronize automatically; a move across that boundary requires a planned copy.
Maintain storage deliberately
The volume can remain billable without a running GPU. Assign an owner, sufficient funding for storage and a review date. For irreplaceable results, keep an independent backup and test recovery rather than treating one persistent resource as an unlimited archive.
Choose a transfer method supported by your access path and data size. Measure a representative copy before a large move. Your final evidence should include the volume ID, written path and successful read from the next environment, not merely a screenshot of a working notebook.
Turn the check into a practical next step
Verify the independent volume, actual write path and recovery result. A familiar directory name is not evidence that files survive deletion of the Pod.
For the documented details, consult the primary documentation; configuration reference. Continue with runpod container volume network disk and runpod terminate pod backup.
