RTX 4090 vs RTX 5090 for LLMs: Compare 24GB and 32GB

In this article
THE QUICK TAKE

The 5090 has more standard VRAM, but useful capacity depends on the model format, supported software and request profile.

The RTX 5090 provides more standard VRAM than the RTX 4090: 32GB rather than 24GB. That difference can help with model placement and request state, but it does not guarantee that an arbitrary artifact or serving profile will fit.

Choose the comparison around a measured problem: context capacity, response delay, queueing or another concrete limitation of the current system.

Compare the published hardware

NVIDIA describes the desktop RTX 4090 as Ada Lovelace with 24GB GDDR6X. The RTX 5090 uses Blackwell and 32GB GDDR7. Neither product page establishes a universal LLM throughput result.

Do not transfer a gaming comparison directly to inference. Numerical formats and data movement can differ substantially between applications.

State why an upgrade is being considered

If the model already works on the 4090, preserve a case that reveals the limitation. For example, compare the same artifact on a short input and a longer input. If extra memory only helps the second profile, that is the appropriate conclusion.

Include chassis, power and cooling requirements in the procurement discussion. The GPU purchase alone is not the cost or compatibility assessment for a complete replacement host.

Verify software before loading weights

Record driver, engine and compute-library versions. A random old build is not a fair test of a newer architecture. Use a reproducible environment rather than installing unrelated packages over an owner’s working setup.

Different builds may be necessary. Document the reason and describe the result as a system comparison where appropriate. Preserve a recovery path to the earlier working environment.

Measure the complete task

Use identical inputs, weight format and output limits. Increase concurrency separately after a stable single session. Extra VRAM can be consumed by weights, request cache and runtime structures; it cannot all be assigned to weights by subtracting the download size.

Check answer quality and successful completion, not only model loading. Record free memory before both runs and any other applications using the card. The final report should connect the additional capacity to the original limitation.

Existing equipment can be assessed for an appropriate task without assuming an immediate purchase or a commercial outcome from its model name.
