Can NVIDIA RTX cards be used for LLM inference?

THE QUICK TAKE

You can offer an RTX workstation for assessment, but the decision depends on the whole configuration and operating conditions. A card name cannot replace memory, stability and economic checks.

If a powerful workstation is used irregularly, could it run a language model in its spare time? This scenario is worth assessing, but a brief home test cannot be extrapolated to a continuous service.

That does not mean every RTX already has an assigned model, rate or stream of paid requests.

Start with the exact configuration

Record the GPU variant and memory, CPU, RAM, storage and power supply specifications. For multiple cards, describe installation and available interfaces. Check device and model-format support in the chosen software environment.

Do not select a workload by family name. Cards in one generation can differ substantially in memory and capabilities, while machines with the same card can differ in cooling and host resources.

Test sustained load

A successful short run shows that the environment works in principle. Operation requires stability over longer periods, acceptable temperature, clock behavior and error levels. Check behavior after a restart and network loss as well.

Measure at stock settings. Do not raise power limits or disable protections to improve results. Unstable overclocking makes fault diagnosis harder and should not be a condition for joining.

Account for the actual site

A workstation may be in an apartment, office or workshop. Record noise, ventilation, electrical supply and operating-hour restrictions. If the computer supports primary work, establish its priority and a procedure for stopping external jobs.

“When I am not using it” is difficult to turn into a predictable service. Offer specific intervals and advance notice for changes instead. A pilot tests whether this operating mode is feasible.

Compare costs and alternatives

Assess whole-machine electricity and additional hosting expenses separately. A GPU already purchased does not imply zero operating cost. Do not buy more cards for presumed rental demand before checking demand and operating terms.

First review the economic calculation and power and cooling. Assessment should produce a specific scenario or a reasoned rejection, rather than a return promise based on the card name.
