How to rent out your GPU for LLM inference

In this article
THE QUICK TAKE

Start with the configuration and availability. Connection feasibility and commercial terms should follow a test of the specific server, rather than the graphics card name.

An idle graphics card is not yet an inference service. Between the hardware and a user request sit the model, software environment, network and operations. If you want to rent out a GPU for language models, first establish who is responsible for each part of that chain.

OpenRouter is the planned token sales channel; connecting to it requires separate platform approval.

What to prepare for an initial conversation

Create a short machine specification:

  • exact GPU model and number of cards;
  • video memory on each card;
  • CPU, system memory and storage;
  • country, city and type of site;
  • availability: continuous, overnight or scheduled;
  • known network, power and maintenance constraints.

You do not need to install unfamiliar software or provide administrative access in advance. If the specifications are incomplete, the card model and a description of your situation are enough. For NVIDIA hardware, nvidia-smi can provide GPU information; support for individual metrics depends on the device.

What a sensible technical assessment involves

The parties first select a model and test scenario. They then check whether the workload fits in memory, how the server behaves with several requests, and how stable its power and network are. Measure recovery after a reboot separately: a machine that responds quickly once warm may take a long time to return to service after a failure.

The result should be clear: a suitable workload, limitations, required changes and reasons to decline. Connecting every functioning GPU to commercial inference is not necessarily economically worthwhile.

What to agree before launch

Determine who pays for electricity, provides cooling and responds to faults. Clarify whether you retain your own workloads on the server, how interruptions are announced and how long leaving the pool takes.

The financial model also needs specifics. Fixed rental, payment for availability and revenue sharing create different obligations. Do not treat expected utilization as guaranteed: even an available server may receive no paid requests.

Assessment notes

After the initial conversation, you can decide whether a pilot is needed.

To prepare, read the GPU requirements and pilot plan. For grant-funded equipment, start with the separate checks.
