Qwen3-8B memory and latency depend on its artifact and reasoning settings; record those before interpreting the GPU result.
Evaluate Qwen3-8B as a specific artifact with a chosen numerical format and reasoning mode. A VRAM answer without those conditions is incomplete. Start with one short session, then test input length, generated output and concurrency separately.
Successful loading does not validate a complete service or every task sharing the Qwen3 name.
Preserve the correct artifact
The official Qwen3-8B card provides model information and usage examples. Record revision, chat template and the particular build if weights have been converted. Do not substitute a Qwen3-VL or Coder model because it belongs to the same broader family.
Use vLLM’s supported-model documentation to check the runtime combination. Model availability and support by the installed version are separate observations. Preserve the exact engine and driver versions with the test.
Distinguish weights from full memory
An illustrative eight billion parameters at 16 bits means sixteen billion bytes of weights alone. Use actual parameter and artifact information for the real candidate rather than the rounded name.
| Stage | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Inventory | Device and available environment |
| Model loading | Initial execution state |
| Short request | One bounded inference path |
| Longer context | Additional sequence capacity |
| Concurrent requests | Shared serving behaviour |
The later stages consume resources not described by the simple weight formula. Keep system RAM separate and label any supported offload arrangement explicitly.
Record thinking mode explicitly
The model author documents reasoning behaviour. Examples use enable_thinking in a particular tokenizer interface; it is not automatically a universal parameter accepted by every API.
Keep the selected mode and output limit with each result. Where the interface exposes it, observe the complete generated amount as well as the visible final answer. Otherwise timing differences can be difficult to interpret. A truncated response should not count as correctly completed work.
Use three verifiable tasks
Prepare a known-answer question, a structured-output task and a longer supplied-text question. Define correctness before running them. Record first-token delay, total duration, output shape and errors.
Increase one workload dimension at a time and repeat the original control case after changes. If that baseline also changes, investigate background processes and environment state before drawing a hardware conclusion.
A useful configuration is a concrete starting point for a pilot; it is not a promise that every Qwen3 workload or maximum advertised window will fit.
