Oracle Cloud GPUs: VMs and bare metal for an owned model

In this article
THE QUICK TAKE

Choose the OCI resource format and exact shape first. VM, bare metal and different GPU families each need their own compatibility and expense checks.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure offers several GPU-resource formats. For an owned language model, first decide between a virtual machine and a physical bare-metal node. This affects control, configuration size and environment preparation.

This official-product-page review is current to 1 November 2026. It does not confirm access for every account or repeat comparative marketing claims without independent measurements.

Select a specific OCI shape

The Oracle GPU Instances page describes VM and bare-metal offerings with different accelerators. Compare GPU, VRAM, device count, CPU, RAM, disks and interconnects for the actual shape. A cloud brand does not replace a specification.

Accelerator platform matters to software. An engine prepared for one stack needs separate validation on another configuration. Similar memory does not guarantee compatible weights, quantization or service functions.

The reviewed range includes NVIDIA directions such as H100 and L40S, plus AMD Instinct. These provide alternatives but require distinct stack checks. Record a different accelerator as a separate experiment with its own configuration and limits.

Separate infrastructure from managed AI

Receiving a VM or bare-metal node does not automatically deploy the model and API. Launch settings, quality, monitoring and recovery remain team responsibilities. Choose another product and terms if more management is needed.

OCI GPU Quick Starts introduce specific scenarios. One offering’s instructions do not describe the entire range. Preserve image and software versions with the results.

Build an applicable budget

Clarify region, capacity purchase method and charging unit. For a multi-card node, distinguish single-GPU pricing from the complete configuration. Include storage, networking, helper machines and team effort.

A promotional comparison chart is not your project calculation. Use the same workload and complete services. If sales must confirm terms, keep them as explicit questions rather than substituting an approximate rate from another cloud.

Validate before choosing a larger node

Suppose a model needs several accelerators. Before expansion, a team tests engine compatibility and requests on an agreed configuration, separately measuring device interaction, artifact loading and service restart.

If the application uses resources differently from expected, investigate the architectural constraint. Large aggregate memory alone does not prove better answer economics. The pilot should produce repeatable conditions and evidence for the next volume, not just a successful launch.

Compare with available equipment

OCI is considered a compute-rental source here, not a route for supplying Oracle with private cards. A cloud test can provide an external requirements and cost reference when comparison conditions match.

Prepare with multi-GPU execution and inference economics.
