OpenRouter connects an inference service through an API, rather than an individual graphics card. A pool operator needs a working endpoint and platform approval; owners need clear terms with the operator.
OpenRouter is considered a channel through which users could access hosted models. These are distinct layers: the platform works with an API provider, rather than directly with a graphics card.
A provider listing requires its own onboarding process. An integration plan alone does not establish future GPU utilization.
Who is responsible for what?
The owner offers equipment with agreed availability. The operator deploys models and organizes the API and operations. The sales channel accepts requests and directs them to a suitable provider under its own rules.
This separation helps define obligations. Losing internet at the owner’s site and an error in the software service, for example, are different events. They should not be recorded under one vague term, “downtime.”
What joining the platform requires
The official OpenRouter page describes application, technical review and integration testing. Requirements include a compatible API, published available models, data-processing information and billing support. Onboarding conditions can change; meeting a technical checklist does not mean automatic approval.
For equipment owners, the conclusion is straightforward: an installed model is a necessary infrastructure component but is not yet a commercial channel.
Why requests are not guaranteed
Even after integration, actual traffic depends on the model, competition, service quality and demand. You cannot count all potential token output as sold in advance. Treat performance as a technical limit and sales as a separate scenario.
Do not buy hardware solely on the idea that “connect it and requests will arrive.” First examine the pilot, costs and exit conditions.
What to ask a pool operator
Clarify current integration status, who selects models and which events count as paid work. Ask for confirmed conditions to be separated from plans. Ask how the agreement changes without external demand and which reports owners receive.
Before discussing payments, read about workload accounting and financial model comparisons. These questions remain relevant regardless of the token sales channel.
