GPU rental or revenue sharing: which terms should you discuss?

In this article
THE QUICK TAKE

A scheme’s name does not define its terms. Before connection, agree on the calculation base, expense allocation, downtime and no-demand cases, and the exit process.

Hardware owners and operators can allocate commercial risk differently. Distinguish fixed rental, payment for available resources and a share of actual revenue.

The choice requires assessment of specific circumstances. A percentage or monthly payment alone does not establish value without understanding costs and obligations.

Fixed rental

This arrangement involves a predetermined payment for a resource and period. You still need to define the resource supplied, permitted interruptions and conditions that change accrual.

Clarify who pays for power, networking and maintenance. The same amount can produce different owner outcomes when costs are included in one case but remain the owner’s responsibility in another.

Availability payments

The definition of “available” is central here. A powered-on server, working model and ready external API are different things. Agree on measurement and its data source.

Resolve disputed cases beforehand: operator failures, site maintenance and loss of external demand. Technical availability does not guarantee a request count.

Revenue sharing

A percentage means something only with its base. Clarify whether it applies to accrued or actually received amounts, which expenses count and how adjustments appear. Define the reporting period and reconciliation evidence.

Without paid requests, the result may differ from owner expectations. Do not replace that scenario with a peak benchmark. Keep costs that remain without workload visible.

Common questions for every arrangement

Before starting, discuss:

  1. Resources, schedule and cooperation duration.
  2. Accrual basis and all material expenses.
  3. Interruption accounting and maintenance responsibility.
  4. Reporting frequency and reconciliation.
  5. Stop notices and access revocation.

Do not leave the exit until later. Owners should know when independent machine use can resume and which restoration actions are required.

Assessment notes

Commercial terms should reflect the configuration and technical-pilot results. Utilization and financial outcomes depend on actual operating conditions and demand.

Prepare using the expense guide and reporting metric list. A preliminary inquiry does not create financial obligations.
