Local LLMs on 24GB VRAM: Test More Than the Weights

In this article
THE QUICK TAKE

A 24GB card supports a range of trade-offs; test the full workload instead of assigning all memory to downloaded weights.

A 24GB GPU can be investigated for several local LLM profiles, but capacity alone does not identify the best model. A larger quantised artifact and a smaller model with more request headroom offer different trade-offs. Choose by quality and stable completion of the intended workload.

Keep the owner’s existing applications and schedule in view. A single successful load under unusually clean conditions does not establish a repeatable resource profile.

Compare exact artifacts

Official Qwen3-14B and Qwen3-32B cards provide concrete models to investigate, not guaranteed fits in their original formats. Preserve revisions and execution requirements.

Rough arithmetic gives 28 billion bytes for fourteen billion parameters at two bytes each. Thirty-two billion parameters at four bits give sixteen billion bytes before additional data. These are illustrative weight estimates, not placement measurements.

Actual formats may use mixed tensor types and metadata. Request state and working structures also consume memory.

Define the comparison objective

A short accurate answer, long-document processing and multiple users are different scenarios. Set mandatory properties before choosing a model: valid structure, correct numbers, language or instruction adherence.

Do not compare one configuration’s short permitted response with another’s long generation as equivalent work. Preserve both input and output boundaries with each result.

Verify isolated loading first

Use one artifact in a known environment without accidental competing processes. Record free VRAM before startup and preserve loading logs. If it fails before the first request, reducing only the client text may not address weight or initial runtime allocation.

Successful loading is not validation of long context. System RAM should not be counted as additional VRAM; any supported hybrid placement needs its own label and timing.

Add the workload in controlled steps

Test short input, longer input and concurrency separately. Record errors, peak memory and useful quality. Keep a repeatable control case and revisit it after changes. If it changes too, investigate the environment before blaming the model.

Repeat at the start and end of the agreed usage window. Also check release and restart if the owner needs the GPU for other work. A useful, bounded role is a valid outcome; it does not require promising support for every popular model.
