A gateway centralizes some logic but adds a service to maintain. Test permissions, routing, accounting and recovery independently.
When applications call different models, keys and rules can spread throughout the code. LiteLLM Proxy moves some logic into a separate service, providing a common access point and usage controls. The team becomes responsible for the selected gateway operating mode.
This overview uses official materials checked on November 1, 2026. It concerns the server gateway; the model-calling library and a self-hosted installation are distinct LiteLLM ecosystem scenarios.
Describe the service boundary
LiteLLM AI Gateway is documented as a self-hosted server with a compatible interface. The application calls it and it calls the selected executor. Model location remains a separate architectural choice.
Before installation, map keys, logs, model execution, content recipients and dependencies. This identifies complexity the gateway removes and complexity moved into another service.
Verify access rules
Virtual keys and restrictions can separate teams and projects. Create test roles with different allowed models and budgets, then check permitted and forbidden calls. An administrator’s success does not validate a restricted client’s behavior.
Record who changes policy and revokes keys. A developer using a direct provider credential can bypass the gateway’s centralized rule. Technical architecture and organizational procedure therefore need to align.
Test routing separately
Router documentation covers balancing, retries and fallback targets. Use equivalent workloads, then simulate agreed primary-target unavailability. Show final executor and the elapsed time of all attempts.
For example, two deployments of one model have different limits. Verify that a burst does not trigger endless retries between overloaded targets. Configure the total request deadline, not just the number of possible switches.
Reconcile internal usage with external billing
Spend Tracking supports accounting by selected dimensions, but gateway estimates need comparison with final provider charges. Preserve price source, model version and treatment of additional units.
Start with ordinary output, long context and an interrupted stream. Compare usage, internal cost and available provider records. Explain differences before using figures in a budget or settlement with equipment owners.
Assign gateway recovery ownership and test configuration persistence. If an ordinary restart cannot reproduce the service, successful model answers do not establish readiness for several applications.
Include operating costs
A self-hosted gateway needs updates, configuration backups and incident response. It does not prove demand for owned inference. A GPU pool separately needs suitable equipment, workload and a commercial channel.
