Operating an owned gateway adds duties as well as control. Client-tool selection does not confirm sales for a GPU pool.
OpenRouter and LiteLLM can both standardize model calls, but the decision extends beyond request syntax. One offers managed external access; the other enables an owned gateway with infrastructure policies. This comparison uses documentation checked on November 1, 2026 and concerns OpenRouter the service and LiteLLM Proxy the server, not every LiteLLM ecosystem product.
Choose the control boundary
LiteLLM AI Gateway is a self-hosted server whose placement and operation the team controls. OpenRouter Quickstart describes managed endpoint access. List work requiring internal configuration and work suitable for an external service. Having engineers does not make extra maintenance free.
| Criterion | External OpenRouter service | Owned LiteLLM Proxy |
|---|---|---|
| Intermediate-layer placement | OpenRouter infrastructure | Infrastructure selected and maintained by your team |
| Application connection | OpenRouter endpoint and key | Own gateway address and issued virtual key |
| Access configuration | Account and routing features | Models, virtual keys, budgets and limits of the installation |
| Operating work | External integration and condition monitoring | Also deployment, updates, monitoring and gateway recovery |
LiteLLM’s linked documentation describes keys and spend tracking. Control can help several applications or supplier contracts; operating a gateway may be unnecessary for one experiment. This is a selection criterion, not a benchmark result.
Count every component
For self-hosting, include gateway hosting, storage, observation, updates and incidents. For managed access, include service conditions and integration work. Both retain model costs under their actual invocation path.
For example, an application uses several direct supplier contracts. An owned gateway can unify rules, but supplier invoices still need reconciliation. Self-hosting availability alone does not establish savings.
Check combined layers
The products can coexist, with an owned gateway before an external service. Map policy precedence, retries and telemetry storage. Set a total deadline before testing: independent retries at both layers may behave unexpectedly.
Record which component selected the model, which selected the provider and where final charges arose. Additional layers should be evaluated as dependencies, not assumed to provide cost-free flexibility.
Compare incident work
LiteLLM Routing documents retries and fallback. Test agreed primary unavailability, budget limits and forbidden models, with comparable application checks externally. Record engineer actions: diagnosis, configuration change and rollback, alongside latency and success.
Test configuration backup and dependency updates in a test environment. These real duties can change total cost even with equal inference rates.
Meaning for GPU operators
A gateway routes to an owned endpoint without automatically creating demand. OpenRouter independent-provider onboarding is separate too. Client tooling does not establish pool sales.
Prepare with token-sales channels and total router cost.
