H100 PCIe vs SXM for LLMs: Compare the Whole System

In this article
THE QUICK TAKE

SXM requires its supported platform, and H100 NVL figures should not be assigned to every PCIe configuration.

Comparing H100 PCIe and H100 SXM starts with the exact SKU and server platform. An SXM module is not an ordinary board for an arbitrary PCIe slot. H100 NVL should also not be substituted for every H100 PCIe product; it identifies a particular configuration.

The useful comparison concerns complete systems capable of executing the intended model under documented conditions.

Preserve the exact specification column

NVIDIA’s H100 page separately presents SXM and NVL information. Tie memory and interconnect figures to the relevant configuration instead of attributing them to the entire family.

If the equipment is already installed, record the actual topology and visible devices. A short server H100 listing does not provide enough detail for a reproducible decision.

Inspect the execution architecture

List GPUs, CPUs, RAM, storage and network. For multi-GPU work, preserve the communication path and supported parallelism. NVIDIA’s NCCL troubleshooting guidance shows why communication and system configuration require their own checks.

A combined memory total does not establish model partitioning or link performance. Identify which arrangement the selected runtime supports before treating the GPUs as one usable model resource.

Compare one workload profile

Use the same artifact, numerical format, template, input/output limits and quality checks. Record runtime versions and explain any required differences. A comparison of different formats is a comparison of complete configurations, not just board packaging.

Measure loading, first-token delay, completed work, errors and per-device memory. Include sustained operation and restart. Do not transfer gaming or peak arithmetic figures into a token-rate promise.

Account for placement and servicing

Confirm the manufacturer’s power, cooling and installation requirements with the proposed site. Buying an accelerator without an appropriate host does not establish a runnable model service. Show any site upgrades as separate budget items.

Document physical access and the recovery route after a failure. These operating constraints can matter even when the benchmark is satisfactory.

A potential role is assessed from a concrete workload and location; the GPU family name alone establishes neither demand nor revenue.
