DeepSeek-R1 vs Distill: Different Models, Different GPU Needs

In this article
THE QUICK TAKE

Running a small R1-Distill artifact does not establish that the same GPU runs the full DeepSeek-R1 model.

DeepSeek-R1 and DeepSeek-R1-Distill are not one artifact with different names. GPU requirements depend on the exact model, architecture and numerical format. Successfully running a small Distill model does not demonstrate that the same device runs full R1.

A precise equipment report should preserve the complete repository identifier and revision so another person can reproduce the intended model choice.

Read the full model name

The official DeepSeek-R1 and DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-7B cards describe different models. Inspect each rather than transferring requirements from a short family label. Record the selected base architecture and execution instructions.

This distinction also matters when comparing published benchmark results. Preserve which artifact produced each answer and measurement.

Separate activity from storage

For mixture-of-experts models, active parameters per token do not equal all stored weights. Parameters not used for one step do not automatically disappear from the artifact.

A Distill model still needs exact parameter and format information. A rounded 7B name is a guide to scale, not a complete runtime memory budget. Include request state, buffers and actual free VRAM in the assessment.

Choose verifiable tasks

Use a known-answer question, a structured response and a task with a checkable result. Preserve input template, reasoning settings where relevant and output limits. An attractive explanation does not establish correctness.

Compare candidates on the same cases. If the smaller model fails a mandatory requirement, a fast result does not make it suitable. If it succeeds, it may provide a useful bounded role without requiring the larger artifact.

Validate one session before traffic

Record loading, a short request, longer input and longer output as separate stages. Add concurrency only after the single-session baseline is stable. Preserve errors and time to readiness after a restart.

Do not add system RAM and GPU memory as an interchangeable capacity. Label any supported hybrid or distributed execution explicitly, including allocation per device.

Avoid promising full R1 deployment from a Distill result. A reproducible configuration helps identify a useful next experiment without unsupported claims about capacity or demand.
