Long audio with Whisper: segments, queues and durable results

THE QUICK TAKE

Internal model windows do not remove whole-file RAM, storage and job-lifecycle requirements.

Handle long Whisper audio as a complete job: input reading, model windows, queueing, timestamps and durable output. Arbitrarily splitting a recording does not guarantee correct transcript assembly or reliable recovery. Design segment identity and interruption handling before expanding the workload across multiple workers.

Separate model windows from the job

The official Whisper description states that transcribe reads the whole file and uses a sliding thirty-second window. That behavior does not eliminate requirements for RAM, storage or total job duration. A long recording remains an application-level task with a lifecycle.

Record the exact implementation and version. Another library using Whisper weights may expose different decoding, segmentation or batching behavior. Do not transfer settings solely because the model family name matches. Keep a short control recording alongside the longer representative files.

Preserve stable identities

A completed segment and a completed recording are different states. Maintain the relationship explicitly so a partial transcript cannot be mistaken for the entire result. Keep attempts separate when the same segment is retried with changed settings.

Review boundaries and timestamps

Use speech that crosses planned boundaries, along with pauses and difficult passages. Check for omitted words, duplication and incorrect timestamp offsets after assembly. A text concatenation that looks fluent may still conceal a missing or repeated span of audio.

Inspect the selected implementation’s transcription behavior and decoding options. Preserve the source offsets needed to return to the recording for review. If external segmentation is used, its rules become part of the recipe and must be held constant when comparing hardware or models.

Test interruption and completion

Stop a controlled small job at a known point and resume according to the intended procedure. Confirm that durable results are reused appropriately and unfinished work is identified without duplicating logical output. Bound retries, task deadlines and simultaneous recordings so a failed file cannot occupy the queue indefinitely.

Measure the whole path, including decoding and result writing, and review transcript quality before estimating a larger archive. For a GPU owner, these measurements describe a practical transcription role rather than a claim based only on VRAM.
