Together AI: serverless and dedicated inference for open models

In this article
THE QUICK TAKE

A model-execution platform differs from a routing-only layer. Consumption options do not establish third-party GPU-provider onboarding terms.

Together AI provides infrastructure for executing, tuning and working with open models. Distinguish it from a gateway that only forwards requests to independent executors. The difference changes technical duties and what a cost comparison means.

Official documentation was checked on November 1, 2026. This article concerns service consumption, not acceptance terms for external physical GPUs or an established commercial channel for a new pool.

Begin with the execution mode

The Together AI overview separates platform directions. Decide whether the inference task needs quick supported-model access or a more defined resource for a selected workload. These goals can lead to different offers.

Record whether the pilot checks quality, latency or continuous operation, then choose mode and interface. An exploratory period’s expense does not automatically describe a future service with different availability and traffic.

Test serverless on your workload

Serverless overview describes supported models without managing a GPU for each call. Documentation also discusses limits and workload effects. One request is not a permanent performance characteristic.

For example, sequential chat may be acceptable while a burst behaves differently. Test both, preserving concurrency and input composition. The report then distinguishes a tested scenario from one still assumed rather than converting a convenient demonstration into a universal result.

Keep model-specific conclusions separate

Check tools, formats and context for the exact model. When comparing an owned server, preserve version and parameters. If an identical configuration cannot be reproduced, identify differences beside the result rather than concealing them in one number.

Quality remains part of testing. A formally successful response may fail the application. Financial discussions should use useful-result cost while retaining technical resource measurements.

Compare complete alternatives

Dedicated inference and owned GPU operation require separate estimates. Include preparation, availability period, maintenance and observation. A short API trial and a month of running an owned node are not comparable until workloads and conditions align.

External-platform data can inform a hypothesis, but does not prove the same economics for a new GPU pool. Hardware, site conditions and actual demand may differ. Keep those assumptions explicit before using a comparison to support infrastructure funding.

Assessment notes

Execution platforms help us understand user alternatives and service criteria. Tool and sales-channel selection do not replace assessment of a particular machine. Begin with the resource and task it can support.
