Technical access to a private endpoint is not customer demand. Decide whether the project needs internal governance, an external sales channel or both.
OpenRouter and Portkey comparisons often begin with gateway, but the tasks may differ: catalog access, organizational policy or managed infrastructure. Define the required role first. Portkey documentation checked on November 1, 2026 uses Prisma AIRS AI Gateway; keeping the familiar name does not imply every installation or term changed completely.
Define what the service should handle
OpenRouter provides common access to models and providers. Portkey AI Gateway describes routing, policy and related controls. Overlapping features do not make architectural boundaries identical.
State the task without product names: accessing several models with clear billing, or centralizing existing applications’ calls to chosen suppliers. These may need different options or several combined layers.
| Question | OpenRouter | Portkey / Prisma AIRS AI Gateway |
|---|---|---|
| Role here | Managed model-and-provider access | Call governance, policies and observability |
| Self-hosting | This comparison uses the external OpenRouter service | Open gateway and self-hosted options; verify feature set |
| Private model | Check onboarding separately from public-catalog access | Custom hosts specify a private or local endpoint |
| Fallback | Check model and provider settings for the request | Documented fallbacks, conditional routing and retries |
Portkey capabilities above come from its linked AI Gateway page. An endpoint route provides connectivity, not a buyer for its tokens.
Map execution
Show applications, intermediaries, keys and executors. Assign configuration updates, logs and availability responsibility. Compare a self-hosted gateway and managed catalog through their complete arrangements.
For an open Portkey component, verify version, license and capabilities. Managed features do not automatically transfer to local installations, and an owned data plane does not remove every external dependency.
Test governance on one scenario
Give two applications different models and spending limits. Test permitted and forbidden calls, then how policy changes take effect and appear in logs. Compare the ability to explain outcomes rather than menu lengths.
Record manual actions as part of the process. They reveal the operating cost of a rule that is invisible in a general API description.
Separate integration and sales
OpenRouter Provider Application is a distinct inference-provider path. Portkey’s gateway does not establish an equivalent automatic third-party GPU-sales channel.
Decide whether the pool needs an internal gateway, a buyer channel or both. Governance may improve operation without proving utilization or replacing commercial integration. Preserve the chosen responsibility boundary and open questions so the decision can be revisited as the team grows.
Decide for the project
Build a task–placement–keys–rules–report–responsibilities matrix and test identical requests. A lower average price is not superiority when functionality or maintenance differs.
Continue with self-hosted gateways and routing economics.
