Free model limits on OpenRouter: planning a bounded test

In this article
THE QUICK TAKE

Free token pricing does not reserve capacity or imply unlimited requests, and a new key does not multiply account-wide allowance.

Check OpenRouter free-model limits for the current account and selected mode before starting a test. Free model-token pricing does not mean guaranteed availability, unlimited frequency or GPU capacity reserved for your application. A useful experiment has a fixed dataset, a deadline and an explicit decision about any paid fallback.

Find the applicable current rule

Inspect the model, account state and remaining allowance through the documented controls. Avoid copying numerical limits from an old guide into a new experiment. The number of API keys is not a multiplier for the account’s available request capacity.

Record when you checked the conditions and what access was verified. Model availability and service limits are different questions from whether the API credential authenticates. Keep them distinct in the test notes so that a rejected request can be interpreted without guessing about hardware demand.

Select an existing free entry

A free variant is a catalog entry with its own identifier. Adding :free to an arbitrary model name does not create free capacity. Use an existing eligible entry or the documented free router, and preserve the exact identifier sent by the application.

A catalog description is not a reservation. Test required features on the actual route: a short text answer does not demonstrate tools, structured output or the desired context. If a feature is mandatory, define a clear failure state rather than silently accepting a less capable route.

Keep the experiment finite

Decision before startingWhy it matters
Bound the datasetThe experiment has a defined finish
Save inputs and task IDsSpecific cases can be repeated without unnecessary calls
Set a waiting deadlineUsers do not remain in an endless queue
Define an eligible backupQuality and any expense are understood in advance

Use controlled concurrency and a bounded retry policy. A burst followed by synchronized retries can waste the useful allowance and obscure which cases actually completed. Save errors separately from incorrect answers, because availability and task quality require different analysis.

Evaluate fallback and the next step

A paid backup changes the experiment’s financial boundary. Decide explicitly whether it is allowed, what model features it must retain and what spending cap applies. A free primary route does not make a mixed route free. Inspect actual model identity and usage after each accepted attempt.

Summarize completed tasks, quality, waiting time and interruptions against the fixed dataset. These results can guide a later paid test or a local serving pilot; they do not prove sustained market demand.
