OpenRouter error 402: credit balance and request limits

In this article
THE QUICK TAKE

A positive displayed balance does not prove that every large or concurrent request fits the applicable credit budget.

An OpenRouter 402 requires checking available credits and the request’s potential expense. A positive displayed balance does not always mean a large new operation will be accepted immediately. Current documentation also describes budgeting for concurrent work, so read the actual error before deciding whether waiting, reducing the request or changing credit is appropriate.

Check the account and key actually used

Confirm the account, any separate key limit and the application process making the call. A balance shown in another environment does not establish this process’s access. Save safe error details, the model identifier and operation time, without logging the credential or private input.

Keep different controls separate: account credit, a scoped key budget and the cost reservation or assessment relevant to simultaneous requests. Otherwise a team may add funds when an application-specific limit is the real constraint, or repeatedly retry a request that exceeds the permitted size.

Review the potential output budget

A large maximum output can matter even when you expect a short answer. Inspect the input and output bounds sent by the client, including defaults added by an SDK or gateway. Reduce unnecessary reserve only if the resulting task still has a useful completion condition.

For a controlled test, retain the same checked model and short input while changing only the output limit. Then test concurrency separately. Record requested and actual lengths so the result shows whether a single request or simultaneous work caused the difficulty. Do not interpret a smaller successful call as proof that the original task is affordable.

Distinguish temporary pressure from insufficient credit

Situation identified from the errorPossible next action
Temporary concurrent-work budget pressureRespect the applicable interval and reduce concurrency
One operation exceeds its budgetReview input, output allowance or available funds
A key has exhausted its scoped allowanceAgree an appropriate limit change
The account lacks creditsReview an authorized funding method

Use Retry-After where it applies, but do not assume every 402 is temporary. Read metadata alongside the documented limits. Payment and account eligibility depend on the actual service conditions and location; there is no universal funding method implied here.

Check the application’s queue

Several workers may reserve or consume resources together even if one user sends little traffic. Set a bounded queue and total task deadline. A retry should remain tied to the original task, with any completed attempts and usage available for reconciliation.

Use the incident to establish a realistic small workload budget before increasing volume. For equipment owners and funding partners, this is API expense planning rather than evidence of GPU scarcity.
