n8n vs Dify vs Flowise vs Langflow for local AI workflows

In this article
THE QUICK TAKE

n8n centers on automation nodes, Dify workspace apps, Flowise authoring surfaces, and Langflow explicit components; the authoring need guides choice.

Choose n8n, Dify, Flowise, or Langflow by the unit of work you want to build. They can all participate in local-model applications, but their workflow structures and configuration ownership differ more usefully than an unsupported “best builder” ranking.

The concrete application boundary

The editorial method compares the documented authoring surface, the place where the model is configured, and the output a beginner can inspect. It does not compare throughput or claim feature exclusivity. n8n is a workflow automation environment with root nodes and connected model sub-nodes. Dify organizes model providers at workspace level and offers application and flow authoring. Flowise distinguishes Assistant, Chatflow, and Agentflow surfaces. Langflow exposes connected components, including model, prompt, and input/output components. These differences affect how a person traces a missing input or changes the generator. A common model endpoint does not make the four saved application formats interchangeable (n8n Ollama credentials) (Dify documentation overview) (Flowise product documentation) (Langflow documentation).

A practical route

Describe the smallest useful result: transform one input, maintain a reusable chat app, compose a conversational chain, or inspect a component graph. Use the table as a shortlist, then build that result with an existing local model service. Avoid starting from a large community template with tools you cannot explain. Keep the same fictional input and requested output during the comparison. This makes the builder’s data mapping visible without claiming that a different prompt proves a model advantage.

A worked example

A team needs to turn a manually supplied release note into an announcement. No schedule, database, or external write is required. In each candidate, locate the input, model selection, instruction, and displayed output. If the team later requires integration into a broader business workflow, reconsider the surrounding workflow needs rather than replacing the model first.

CheckRecord
n8nRoot-node data mapping with a connected Ollama model sub-node.
DifyWorkspace-managed model provider selected by an app or flow step.
FlowiseA chosen Chatflow or Agentflow authoring surface with connected model nodes.
LangflowExplicit input, model, prompt, and output components inspected in Playground.

Reading the failure correctly

A builder can present a model name while the underlying runtime is unavailable. A node can also be correctly configured but receive the wrong input. Diagnose authoring structure before comparing generated prose. Saved application export and credential portability should be evaluated separately; the table does not promise automatic migration between products.

What completes the check

Select a builder for a concrete authoring need and retain one minimal working example. More integrations are useful only when the intended application requires them; they are not evidence that a first local text workflow is already correct.
