LFM2.5 vs LFM2 for narrow text tasks: respect the task boundary

In this article
THE QUICK TAKE

LFM cards favor bounded text use and explicitly caution against programming and knowledge-intensive tasks.

LFM2.5 and LFM2 are small hybrid models with explicit task boundaries. They are worth evaluating for narrow text decisions, but their cards do not justify treating them as general coding or knowledge authorities.

Read the versioned scope

The LFM2.5-1.2B-Instruct card describes a text-only instruction model and recommends against programming and knowledge-intensive tasks. The earlier LFM2 card gives a similar boundary for that generation.

The official catalogue distinguishes released models and formats. The LFM2 report explains the hybrid short-convolution and attention design. A later post-training release can improve behavior without changing that general architectural family.

For the selected LFM2.5 model, the card lists 16 layers: 10 double-gated convolution blocks and 6 GQA blocks.

Use a genuinely narrow task

Prepare a fictional support-message classifier with explicit labels and all required information in the input. The model decides whether a message is a request for status, a request for clarification or outside the defined scope.

Include an uncertain outcome for ambiguous text. Do not ask the model to infer undocumented product behavior or answer a programming question merely because the message contains a code-like term. The desired operation is classification of supplied text, not external knowledge recall.

Make the decision boundary visible

CaseRequired behavior
Clear status requestSelect the declared status label
Explicit clarificationSelect the clarification label
Mixed or ambiguous requestFollow the supplied uncertainty rule
Unknown product claimAvoid inventing background facts
Unrelated textRemain outside the taxonomy

Use the same definitions for both versions. A prompt change that clarifies an ambiguous category should be evaluated separately from replacing LFM2 with LFM2.5.

Inspect the model-specific output path

The LFM2.5 card documents its own tool and chat conventions. For this text task, keep the instruction interface clear and avoid accidentally interpreting an ordinary answer as a tool proposal.

Preserve the exact checkpoint and format. If one artifact fails to load, record compatibility separately. If it loads but returns extra text, separate format compliance from incorrect classification. These outcomes require different remedies.

Keep improvement claims bounded

Store the input collection, reference labels, prompt versions and accepted outcomes. Compare confusion pairs and uncertain decisions rather than only one aggregate number. Keep all examples, including those where the newer version does not help.

The result can support one version for the tested narrow text workflow. It does not establish general coding competence, reliable factual expertise or performance on retrieval and multimodal systems not included in the task. Respecting the card’s stated scope is part of choosing a useful small model, not an obstacle to finding a bounded role it can actually satisfy.
