CPU, GPU AND RAM

GPU hosting, GPU servers and model APIs: what are you renting?

THE QUICK TAKE

Identify the service layer: physical resources, execution environment or ready endpoint. GPUs do not automatically include model installation, monitoring and API maintenance.

GPU hosting describes different offers. One supplier provides a machine, another helps operate software and another sells access to a hosted model. For equipment owners and infrastructure funders, this distinction defines expenses and responsibilities.

Separate resources, environment and model

A GPU server comprises CPU, system RAM, accelerators, disks and network. A GPU VM adds a resource-delivery method. A model API is another layer: clients use a service without directly managing devices.

The accelerated EC2 catalogue specifies compute. NVIDIA Triton’s model repository describes model-artifact organisation. Software and operating work remain between ordering a machine and providing a service.

Do not assume a tariff includes every layer. Inspect the selected service’s scope.

Map responsibilities

Identify who installs drivers, loads weights, updates the model and handles failures. Separately assign site, network and external-channel accounting.

A simple work–owner–included-in-price table helps. An ownerless line reveals an unresolved task; the word managed does not make it disappear.

For owned equipment, specify host access and when environment changes are permitted.

Verify the charging unit

A machine can be charged by availability period and a model API by an agreed consumption unit. They cannot be reduced to one price without workload and expense components.

In a hypothetical occasional-request pilot, an always-on server and on-request execution incur different waiting costs. Regular traffic may change the result.

Preserve weight storage, transfer, support and recovery expenses. If charged separately, show them before selecting placement.

Test the complete scenario

Server checks establish hardware suitability. API checks also require request handling, errors and agreed limits. One short answer cannot confirm both completely.

Test deployment from scratch, an ordinary request, concurrency and post-maintenance recovery. Record owner and operator actions.

Check exit: equipment return, installed artifacts and access must have a clear outcome.

Request example reports for each layer. A machine specification, model-health log and API-consumption statement explain different service dimensions. Clarify boundaries before budget and contractor selection when one name hides all three.

Assessment notes

Token sales through OpenRouter are planned after required onboarding; this article announces neither an available service catalogue nor guaranteed utilisation.
