A cloud credit covers eligible charges under a specific programme; it is not a general-purpose equipment budget.
Check which GPU expenses cloud credits cover by mapping every planned service to the specific credit. Record eligible products, account, status, period and remaining amount. A programme name or headline balance does not establish coverage for an entire experiment.
Cloud credits should not be described as physical equipment available for an operator or as unrestricted money for buying servers.
Read the specific credit details
AWS Billing documents fields including applicable products, owning account, start and expiry dates, and status. This is one platform’s example. Another programme needs its own documentation and account record.
Preserve the check date and an internal credit reference. For an outside discussion, provide an anonymised summary rather than an activation code or access to the billing account. Credit eligibility and GPU launch availability should be checked separately.
Map each expense
| Planned expense | Check | Recorded outcome |
|---|---|---|
| GPU compute | Eligible service and charge type | Confirmed or unresolved |
| Dataset storage | Covered product | Separate coverage entry |
| Result transfer | Traffic charging rules | Cash reserve if needed |
| Support or third-party service | Programme exclusions | Not assumed covered |
| Physical GPU purchase | Whether a mechanism exists | Not equated with compute credit |
If coverage remains unknown, keep it unknown in the budget. A large balance does not remove the possibility of charges payable outside the programme.
Check expiry and application timing
AWS says credits apply to eligible charges until used or expired. A displayed balance and a current estimate can also reflect different update times. Match the observation date to the period of planned usage.
As a hypothetical scenario, an experiment continues past the expiry of part of the credit. Split the budget into periods rather than assuming an uninterrupted server run has uninterrupted coverage. This is a calendar check, not a claim about a current cloud tariff.
Keep permitted use separate from transfer
AWS Promotional Credit terms describe restrictions on the instrument, while authorised organisational sharing has its own billing rules. Do not expand those mechanisms into permission to sell unused credit to a third party.
For a collaborative research task, describe who operates within the authorised account and who controls data and spending. Questions about a proposed arrangement belong with the programme owner or support; preserve the answer with the plan.
