Serving a request stream matters more than a single-request record. Increase batching gradually, assessing successful group work and the individual user experience.
An idle GPU may answer one user quickly while remaining underused much of the time. In another mode, the same machine receives many requests and builds a long queue. Scheduling shared work lies between those extremes, which is why operators need suitable software as well as cards.
What continuous batching means
Continuous batching executes incoming requests together while changing the active group as processing progresses. vLLM lists this capability among its serving mechanisms. It is a useful technical starting point but does not establish an optimal load for a particular server.
An owner can picture a checkout handling several unfinished orders: advance the overall flow without making short orders wait indefinitely behind long ones. The analogy explains scheduling’s purpose, rather than the engine’s internal algorithm.
Why high utilization is insufficient
Suppose a hypothetical experiment increases concurrency and GPU occupancy rises. Some answers also become late or fail. The card works harder, but useful output may not improve.
Report successful requests, waiting time and latency distribution. Count completed work within selected quality limits. Maximum device utilization is not itself a commercial-service goal.
This differs from simply “keeping a GPU busy.” Discuss a specific workload delivering reproducible, usable results.
Build a concurrency ladder
Start with few simultaneous requests. Use the same inputs and output limits at each step. Save each result before increasing load.
Include in the pilot table:
- active request count and new-arrival rate;
- time to first token and full response;
- successful completion share;
- memory use and queue formation;
- whole-machine consumption over comparable intervals.
Mark cold startup and warm operation separately. Do not combine them into one average and explain all differences through request count.
Find the operating boundary
The boundary occurs before a crash: when the next load increase harms the agreed user outcome. Short chat may exceed acceptable waiting time while memory errors are still absent.
Compare equivalent limits across machines. A configuration handling less traffic reliably is not useless; it may need another role. Decide using total costs and service objectives.
Save settings and repeat the selected step in a sustained test. A brief successful run does not check temperature, recovery or operational availability.
Assessment notes
Our proposed pooling approach selects workloads after measurement and agrees limits with owners. We do not claim every GPU already has paid traffic waiting.
