Sketches and comments made image intent more explicit

THE RETROSPECTIVE TAKE

Spatial annotations make edit scope visible, but acceptance still needs an identified reference and explicit preservation conditions.

Editing became a communication problem

The image-generation announcement of March 25, 2025 positioned images inside a conversation. The Images 2.0 announcement of April 21, 2026 extended that editing workflow. On September 8, 2026, Images 2.5 introduced sketches and image comments. The interesting change was not simply another place to type. A mark could connect a request to a location, reducing the distance between an intended edit and the evidence needed to assess it.

Location is only part of intent

Consider an illustrative product image with a lamp beside a chair. A comment saying “warmer” could mean the lamp’s material, its emitted light, or the entire scene’s color balance. Circling the lampshade narrows the location but does not settle the operation. A useful edit instruction identifies the object, the property to change, and the surrounding properties to preserve. This separates a local material adjustment from a global lighting redesign without demanding that a reviewer infer the author’s intention.

The reference must remain identifiable

An annotation belongs to a particular image revision. After a crop, rotation, or composition change, the same apparent coordinates can refer to a different object. A practical review record therefore retains the reference image beside its comments and the resulting revision. This is an application workflow recommendation, not a claim about an undocumented platform storage format. Without that association, a later reviewer may mistake a correctly interpreted old instruction for a failed response to the current image.

A bounded comparison fixture

A small evaluation can begin with an illustrative image containing a blue chair, a brass lamp, and a neutral wall. Request a fabric change on the chair while preserving the lamp and wall. Review the marked area, object boundaries, and protected neighboring objects separately. If the fabric changes but the brass becomes orange, the operation has succeeded locally while failing a preservation condition. This distinction is more informative than one overall preference score. No measured result is implied by the fixture; it specifies what a future comparison would inspect.

More precise review, not automatic correctness

Sketches and comments can expose disagreements earlier because they make spatial scope visible. They do not prove that every localized instruction will be obeyed, that every interface exposes identical controls, or that image changes are reversible at the object level. The causal lesson is narrower: when a conversation gains a spatial reference, acceptance criteria should gain the same granularity. Reviewers can then distinguish an ambiguous instruction, a reference mismatch, and an execution error rather than treating all three as poor image quality.
