Why planetary data belongs in a workspace beyond the context window

THE RETROSPECTIVE TAKE

A workspace lets an agent refer to and transform large evidence without treating the prompt as the only storage system or losing the link to source data.

Earth AI’s October agent announcement gives a concrete setting for a broader systems question: where should evidence live while a model reasons about it? Planet-scale data makes the distinction between a prompt and a workspace especially visible.

The dated path

The prompt is a view, not the entire investigation

An investigation may need only a compact description of available layers while a tool processes the underlying data elsewhere. Our retrospective interpretation is that an external workspace separates the model’s working view from the evidence store. This can reduce unnecessary movement of large inputs through the prompt, but the important benefit is semantic: the agent can retain references to artifacts and operations instead of pretending that every relevant detail was directly read as text by the model.

References need enough context to remain meaningful

An artifact identifier is useful only if the system can determine what it contains, how it was produced and which earlier input it depends on. A summary detached from those relationships can become a new source of uncertainty. A good workspace contract therefore connects derived layers to their source, operation and version. This is an engineering interpretation of the architecture, not a claim about a particular internal implementation. The goal is to make a compact reasoning view inspectable rather than merely shorter.

A counterfactual with repeated transformations

Imagine an agent that repeatedly summarizes large intermediate results into its conversation history. Later steps can lose distinctions that the summaries omitted. Compare it with an agent that keeps the original artifacts in a workspace and retrieves the specific evidence needed for each step. The useful evaluation asks whether the final result can be traced back through the transformations. It should also inspect failure cases where a stale reference or an incorrect summary gives the model a misleading view of the workspace.

What this changes for compute infrastructure

A workspace-oriented job can use storage, data processing and model inference in different phases. Treating its resource use as one homogeneous language-model request hides these dependencies. Operators can preserve artifact lifetime and job identity while allowing specialized workers to perform the relevant transformations. The experimental announcement does not establish unlimited autonomy or universal scale. Its historical significance is the move from asking a model to contain an investigation toward asking it to coordinate an investigation whose evidence remains outside the prompt and can be examined independently.
