In this analysis
A bounded answer reduces output ambiguity without establishing that the application's categories or resulting action are correct.
Many application decisions need a selected value rather than a paragraph. The Decisions API release treated that distinction as an endpoint design choice. Its significance was not that language models suddenly became classifiers, but that a bounded answer space became part of the service contract.
The model preceded the specialized interface
Sol and Luna launched on September 22, 2026. The API changelog records Decisions public beta on October 6, 2026. Its October 22, 2026 GA announcement then presented bounded decisions using Luna. These dates separate a model’s general capability from a product designed around a narrower interaction pattern.
Output boundaries change application work
Imagine routing an incoming technical support ticket. A prose answer such as send this to the integration team still needs interpretation by the application. A declared choice can be connected more directly to an existing queue identifier.
That does not eliminate judgment. The application must define categories, resolve overlaps and decide what happens when evidence is insufficient. A bounded output is useful because it reduces one form of ambiguity, not because it establishes the correctness of the selected destination.
The answer space is a product decision
A category list encodes assumptions about the workflow. If a ticket concerns both authentication and ingestion, forcing a single familiar label can conceal a legitimate multi-stage problem. Changing the available choices changes what the system can express.
Keep the answer space versioned with the task definition. A new category can alter downstream handling even when the model and endpoint remain unchanged. This makes schema design part of the decision system rather than a formatting detail added after inference.
A discriminating routing fixture
Prepare illustrative tickets with an explicit category, overlapping causes and missing information. Have reviewers establish acceptable handling before running the endpoint. Inspect the selected value together with the evidence available for that case.
Include a category-name change while preserving the underlying queue. Check whether application mapping remains correct. The fixture distinguishes semantic classification, output parsing and destination execution. A syntactically valid choice can succeed at one boundary and fail at another.
What the dedicated endpoint contributes
The release made bounded inference a more explicit integration option. It did not replace application criteria, destination ownership or validation against representative requests.
The retrospective lesson is that narrowing an interface can make its remaining assumptions more visible. A useful decision contract connects allowed answers to observable application behavior and preserves the unresolved cases that the answer space cannot honestly represent. That is more precise than treating a short response as merely a faster version of a chat answer.
