GPU FUNDING

Working capital for LLM inference: what happens after buying GPUs?

THE QUICK TAKE

Buying GPUs and sustaining a service are different project parts. Connect the operating budget to mandatory payment dates and when funds actually become available.

The GPU arrives, the server is assembled and the model runs. Regular resource spending is only beginning: power, hosting, connectivity and specialist time. If procurement consumed the entire budget, even a suitable configuration may stop before the team learns enough about its operation.

Working capital supports an agreed operating period. It sustains work and mandatory payments while commercial traffic is still being validated. Set the amount from the project scenario rather than one percentage of equipment cost.

Build a calendar rather than one total

List payment dates and related work. Some costs precede API readiness: delivery, installation and environment preparation. Others recur regardless of request count. Show possible receipts separately with timing assumptions.

In a hypothetical pilot, week one might involve configuration, week two measurement and another week error investigation. If the estimate covers only useful workload time, these weeks become unexpected costs.

Separate mandatory and adjustable expenses

Hosting and support obligations may continue without external requests, while some tests can be limited or postponed. For each line, state whether spending can be reduced, who decides and how quickly changes take effect.

FinOps Budgeting identifies budget ownership and adjustment procedures. For a GPU pool, give the operating period an agreed limit, owner and deviation-review process. Extra expenses should not arise automatically from a general wish to continue experimenting.

Account for receipt timing

Accrued revenue and money available to pay the next bill occur at different times. Before launch, understand channel settlement rules and possible adjustments. For planned OpenRouter integration, confirm approval and terms separately; the official page describes monthly provider invoicing.

Build an initial-period scenario without external receipts. It shows how long the operating budget lasts and which decisions are needed before exhaustion. Do not resolve uncertainty by assuming continuous sales of every produced token.

Discuss reserve and experiment limits

A reserve is not unlimited spending permission. Define its events: postponed launch, component replacement or repeat testing. State which expenses need prior approval and when the whole plan is reviewed.

A practical document can have four columns: event, expense, date and payment source. Add actual values after the period. This reveals mistaken assumptions quickly and informs future launches.

Planning the operating budget

Operations are a separate funding subject even when owners already provide GPUs. Discuss use of funds, outcomes and reporting before deciding.

Prepare with budget allocation and report review.
