NVIDIA RTX A6000: 48GB and explicit multi-GPU memory

In this article
THE QUICK TAKE

NVLink capability and application-supported distributed memory are separate facts.

NVIDIA RTX A6000 is assessed here as an exact Ampere board configuration. Its published 48 GB capacity is the starting point for a workload qualification, not a measured serving or rendering result.

Exact model and memory variants

RTX A6000 uses Ampere with 48 GB GDDR6 ECC and 300 W active dual-slot construction. RTX 6000 Ada and Quadro RTX 6000 are separate generations.

LLM backend and memory budget

Budget48 GB for weights, KV cache and runtime. With NVLink, two boards do not automatically become a single96 GB device; distribution must be supported by the actual application and launch mode.

Passing the architecture requirement does not certify every model, quantization kernel or prebuilt package.

Compatibility evidence: vLLM GPU requirements.

Cycles and batch rendering

Second-generation RT cores apply to supported OptiX rendering. Test the complete scene and denoising. NVLink distributed memory requires explicit support; ordinary multi-board execution may duplicate data.

Integration into a server or workstation

Document the bridge and slot spacing only if the proposed workload actually uses it. Active300 W boards require their own airflow path. A successful two-card installation is not evidence that the model or scene sees pooled memory.

A concrete qualification scenario

A team already owns two A6000 boards and assumes a single96 GB capacity. First run one model and scene on one card. Then test the explicitly configured distributed or independent-worker mode. Preserve per-device allocations and application settings. If each worker loads the same artifact, record that duplication. The experiment should explain the actual memory behavior before any larger artifact is accepted.

The evidence to retain

Keep an ordinary qualification record with the actual test outputs.

Identify the tested variant, software build and execution mode before entering observations. Leave unavailable measurements explicitly unknown.

The fields below separate published specifications from observed allocation and job completion, so a later operator can repeat the same case.

Evidence fieldWhat this profile must retain
Hardware identityNVIDIA RTX A6000; physical variant and reported device identifier
Memory boundary48 GB published; observed free memory before and after loading
Inference artifactExact weights digest, quantization, context and offload configuration
Render artifactScene digest, renderer version, backend and denoising setting
System envelopeDriver, container/build digest, enclosure and cooling configuration
Completion evidenceApplication exit status, output validity and observed memory failures

A bridge detected by the driver is not proof that this model or scene used distributed memory; retain application-level allocations.
