Preprocessing memory depends on representations and parallelism. Compare configurations producing the same correct output and include rerun costs.
Preparing an AI archive can take more time and RAM than source-file size suggests. Multiple representations, parallel processes and intermediate results often explain the difference. This can be a distinct role for a RAM server and a separate pilot budget for a funding partner.
Describe transformations sequentially
List reading, text extraction, cleaning, chunking, tokenization and saving. At each stage, identify retained data and what can be released or written. Hugging Face Datasets processing describes transformation operations. EC2 instance classification distinguishes compute-optimized and memory-optimized options. Choose from the observed process rather than the general AI label.
When a processor creates several text copies, source size on disk no longer estimates RAM adequately. Make those temporary representations visible in the operating description.
Change batch size and workers separately
Start with a bounded dataset and one worker. Increase batch size without changing worker count, then test worker parallelism separately. This helps identify what increases RAM; changing both at once leaves an out-of-memory failure unexplained.
For every stage, record peak use, elapsed time and correctly prepared records. Include parsing failures as well as completed documents: errors may have reduced the work actually performed. Faster completion of fewer valid records is not an equivalent result.
Test a streaming approach
Where supported, compare partial processing with loading the entire dataset. Streaming may reduce RAM while adding reads, repeated passes or storage requirements. It is not always the better mode: some operations require whole-dataset access or specifically organized state. Verify tool support and required correctness.
An illustrative pilot can also reprocess only changed documents. That is another alternative to buying memory for repeated full archive rebuilds. Preserve source identities so changed and unchanged records can be distinguished reliably.
Account for intermediate files
Lower RAM use can increase disk activity. Observe free space, writes and reads alongside CPU time so the application does not merely move its bottleneck. Define retention and cleanup after failures. Artifacts left by unsuccessful runs can change the conditions of the next test.
Separate host RAM from GPU VRAM when accelerated preparation is involved. Their combined total does not identify the resource causing the limit or explain the data movement between stages.
Choose a pilot resource
Compare the current configuration, bounded batches and a higher-RAM machine against the same output requirements. Show funders full-process consumption and rerun costs rather than only one stage’s minimum time.
Its role requires an agreed workload; no ready-made program for every RAM server is announced. Continue with compute-optimized hosting and NVMe for models.
