GPU VBIOS and InfoROM: different baseline fields

In this article
THE QUICK TAKE

VBIOS version, InfoROM image version, object versions and validation results are separate GPU baseline fields. They cannot be reduced to “firmware healthy.” Preserve values with query support and return status, rather than prescribing flashing from one version difference.

Bind the baseline to a device

Record UUID, PCI identity, model and driver/NVML version. A GPU index is convenient for a current list but insufficient as the sole historical key. InfoROM query support varies by product. Not Supported does not mean corruption. Separate device inaccessibility from an unsupported function. Retain raw status and field source so a collector update cannot turn missing information into a fictitious zero or an empty “healthy” string.

Separate image and object versions

NVML describes InfoROM image version as identity of the particular image, while object versions describe structures and supported features of their objects. VBIOS has another field. Configuration checksum is different again and can change with configuration or driver releases according to documentation. A changed checksum does not automatically establish flash corruption. Compare tool versions and changed settings while preserving the old observation.

Check validation independently

Where supported, NVML ValidateInforom reads InfoROM and verifies checksums. DCGM exposes separate identifiers for image version, object versions, configuration checksum, validity and VBIOS. Keep them separate in collection. In an illustrative comparison, two devices have different image versions but successful supported validation checks. This does not establish equal performance or complete hardware health; it shows that a version-string difference is not itself detected corruption.

Investigate a baseline change

After maintenance, compare before/after records with authorized actions. Check whether replacement changed the UUID or collection methods changed. Do not run arbitrary flash utilities or firmware updates based on generic guidance. Supported images, procedures and compatibility depend on the vendor and exact model. For actual corruption status, preserve diagnostics and follow the intended service process rather than trying to make every card’s version strings identical.

Preserve machine-readable history

Retain timestamp, device identity, field name, raw value and return status. Represent unsupported fields explicitly as missing or unsupported. Verify parsers after tool upgrades because text output can change. Matching strings are not a health certificate; different versions are not automatically a fault. This baseline reconstructs technical context and supports maintenance comparison without replacing compute and hardware checks with one firmware label. Keep validation scope visible when the record is reused in another incident.
