Radeon PRO W7900: 48 GB standard versus Dual Slot

THE QUICK TAKE

Radeon PRO W7900 has standard and Dual Slot implementations, both with 48 GB GDDR6 and a 295 W specification.

Radeon PRO W7900 has standard and Dual Slot implementations, both with 48 GB GDDR6 and a 295 W specification. Layout matters for card placement even when memory and board power match.

Official variants and the memory boundary

The table follows AMD materials for this model. It describes dedicated device memory, not system RAM. A “not verified” entry preserves a source gap; a neighboring configuration cannot supply the missing specification.

Establish the LLM software path

The ROCm Core SDK 10.1.0 device list includes Radeon PRO W7900. This is an exact hardware entry, not approval for every operating system, PyTorch build, or quantization format. Select the specific GPU and OS in the compatibility matrix, then record the driver, runtime, and framework release. A listed card does not establish that every kernel used by an inference engine works correctly. Establish device detection, loading of a saved model revision, and a reference request before exploring sustained operation or concurrent requests.

A practical scenario for this model

The practical task is replacing a board with the more compact official implementation to change workstation expansion layout. Match dimensions, connectors, and documentation for the exact variant first; equal 48 GB does not make the mechanical replacement transparent. Check device ordering and PCIe topology with neighboring cards after installation. Adding another W7900 produces an aggregate 96 GB, not one memory pool for a model or scene. LLM execution needs an established placement and communication scheme rather than simply loading identical files. Preserve a reference request before and after changing the layout. That separates functional equivalence of the new board from effects introduced by the changed host arrangement and neighboring devices.

Validate Blender Cycles separately

RDNA 3 meets the HIP hardware floor in the Blender Cycles 5.2 LTS manual: RDNA 1 or newer. This renderer requirement is independent of ROCm LLM support; validate the actual driver, build, and scene on the intended machine.

Use the original scene and identical selected devices for the frame. Changes in GPU count or selection order need separate documentation to explain differences between layouts.

Preserve a machine-level acceptance record

AMD defines a workstation deployment boundary: the relevant W6000/W7000 products and AI PRO R9700 are not designed or validated for datacenter use. Rack installation alone does not change that qualification.

Preserve the exact W7900 implementation and slot arrangement. Dual Slot does not remove AMD workstation deployment boundary or establish datacenter qualification.

The acceptance artifact should connect board identity, software versions, model revision, and the workload actually exercised. After any of those changes, the old result describes its original run rather than establishing compatibility of the new configuration.

Multiple GPUs in a pool: one service or one large model?; GPU, NVMe and NIC contention on a shared PCIe path; NVIDIA and AMD GPU catalogue for LLM inference and server rendering.
