AMD Instinct MI350X and MI355X: LLM inference and server rendering boundaries

In this article
THE QUICK TAKE

Equal288GB capacity does not make MI350X and MI355X power or cooling configurations interchangeable.

AMD Instinct MI350X and MI355X is assessed here as an exact CDNA 4 board configuration. Its published 288 GB capacity is the starting point for a workload qualification, not a measured serving or rendering result.

Exact model and memory variants

MI350X and MI355X each publish288 GB HBM3e in CDNA4 OAM form. Their1000 W and 1400 W envelopes are materially different despite equal memory capacity.

VariantMemoryPublished board powerCooling / format
MI350X OAM288 GB HBM3e1000 WServer-platform cooling; OAM accelerator
MI355X OAM288 GB HBM3e1400 WServer-platform cooling; OAM accelerator

LLM backend and memory budget

For gfx950 and 288 GB, retain exact build, model, context and batching. Matching capacity does not establish equal speed or operation availability. Each edition needs its own software qualification.

A ROCm support entry does not certify every inference engine, model kernel or quantization format.

Compatibility evidence: ROCm compatibility matrix.

Cycles and batch rendering

CDNA4 compute support does not establish RDNA eligibility for standard Cycles HIP. Even288 GB cannot remove a renderer architecture requirement. Another engine needs separate official evidence and an actual validated result.

Integration into a server or workstation

Treat1000 W MI350X and 1400 W MI355X as different server integration cases. Preserve the platform cooling, power configuration and actual topology, rather than transferring a qualification because both modules say288 GB. The supported host configuration is part of the resource identity.

A concrete qualification scenario

A cluster team considers two vendor server configurations carrying the different OAM models. Use a shared model/context control while retaining separate platform manifests and output checks. Explore a larger candidate only in a new case. If one configuration behaves differently, inspect the actual software and power settings before assigning an architectural explanation. The comparison documents both 288 GB devices without inventing a universal performance ordering.

The evidence to retain

Keep an ordinary qualification record with the actual test outputs.

Identify the tested variant, software build and execution mode before entering observations. Leave unavailable measurements explicitly unknown.

The fields below separate published specifications from observed allocation and job completion, so a later operator can repeat the same case.

Evidence fieldWhat this profile must retain
Hardware identityAMD Instinct MI350X and MI355X; physical variant and reported device identifier
Memory boundary288 GB published; observed free memory before and after loading
Inference artifactExact weights digest, quantization, context and offload configuration
Render artifactScene digest, renderer version, backend and denoising setting
System envelopeDriver, container/build digest, enclosure and cooling configuration
Completion evidenceApplication exit status, output validity and observed memory failures

The 1000 W and 1400 W host arrangements require independent records; 288 GB on both modules cannot establish interchangeable power or cooling conditions.
