MI250 and MI250X each expose two64GB domains; preserve that topology before model-fit conclusions.
AMD Instinct MI250 and MI250X is assessed here as an exact CDNA 2 board configuration. Its published 64 GB capacity is the starting point for a workload qualification, not a measured serving or rendering result.
Exact model and memory variants
Each MI250 or MI250X OAM contains two separately enumerated GCDs with 64 GB HBM2e each.128 GB is the module total, not one independently addressable GPU memory domain.
| Variant | Memory | Published board power | Cooling / format |
|---|---|---|---|
| MI250 OAM per GCD | 64 GB HBM2e per GCD; 2 GCDs; 128 GB module total | Not specified | Server-platform cooling; OAM; two separately enumerated GCDs per module |
| MI250X OAM per GCD | 64 GB HBM2e per GCD; 2 GCDs; 128 GB module total | Not specified | Server-platform cooling; OAM; two separately enumerated GCDs per module |
Specifications: Official product/support documentation.
LLM backend and memory budget
For gfx90a, map process ranks to actual visible devices and 64 GB memory. Validate RCCL and artifact distribution separately. The 128 GB total does not establish a single-process single-GPU weight allocation.
A ROCm support entry does not certify every inference engine, model kernel or quantization format.
Compatibility evidence: ROCm compatibility matrix.
Cycles and batch rendering
CDNA2 and ROCm compute do not automatically satisfy Cycles HIP hardware requirements targeting RDNA. Calling the server a render worker needs documented support for the specific renderer, not an OAM memory total.

Integration into a server or workstation
OAM requires a matching server platform rather than a desktop PCIe slot. Keep the exact MI250 or MI250X identity, module/device mapping and vendor thermal documentation. Power remains unknown in this profile. The AMD launch record confirms these are distinct products; no unsupported power value is borrowed.
A concrete qualification scenario
A host inventory reports one 128 GB item per module while the runtime enumerates two GPUs. Correct the scheduler inventory to preserve both 64 GB domains under the physical module identity. Run one bounded control on each domain, then a separate distributed case with retained rank mapping. A failure to place an artifact on one domain does not contradict128 GB module total; it reveals the actual allocation boundary.
The evidence to retain
Keep an ordinary qualification record with the actual test outputs.
Identify the tested variant, software build and execution mode before entering observations. Leave unavailable measurements explicitly unknown.
The fields below separate published specifications from observed allocation and job completion, so a later operator can repeat the same case.
| Evidence field | What this profile must retain |
|---|---|
| Hardware identity | AMD Instinct MI250 and MI250X; physical variant and reported device identifier |
| Memory boundary | 64 GB published; observed free memory before and after loading |
| Inference artifact | Exact weights digest, quantization, context and offload configuration |
| Render artifact | Scene digest, renderer version, backend and denoising setting |
| System envelope | Driver, container/build digest, enclosure and cooling configuration |
| Completion evidence | Application exit status, output validity and observed memory failures |
A process rank must map to a specific64 GB GCD; the 128 GB OAM total is not enough information to reproduce allocation behavior.
