NVIDIA A800 40GB Active: inference compute and rendering caveats

In this article
THE QUICK TAKE

No display outputs is an integration fact, not a blanket prohibition on offline CUDA rendering.

NVIDIA A800 40 GB Active is assessed here as an exact Ampere board configuration. Its published 40 GB capacity is the starting point for a workload qualification, not a measured serving or rendering result.

Exact model and memory variants

A800 40 GB Active is an official240 W active-cooled workstation compute product. It has40 GB HBM2 and no physical display outputs; it is not the data-center A800 80 GB.

LLM backend and memory budget

For Ampere, validate the engine, per-model memory and isolation mode. Multiple boards do not automatically become one 160 GB device. Physical40 GB capacity differs from the memory of an individual MIG instance.

Passing the architecture requirement does not certify every model, quantization kernel or prebuilt package.

Compatibility evidence: vLLM GPU requirements.

Cycles and batch rendering

No display output does not make offline CUDA rendering impossible. This is a compute product: independently verify Cycles CUDA device detection and complete scene execution rather than transferring RTX promises.

Integration into a server or workstation

The official interactive setup uses a companion GPU for display. A headless worker has a different arrangement, which must be enumerated explicitly. Keep the active cooler intake unobstructed and identify which board each application actually selected.

A concrete qualification scenario

A workstation contains A800 Active and a smaller display GPU. Select the compute board explicitly for the inference case and verify reported memory before loading. For the rendering case, enumerate Cycles devices and retain the selected CUDA device and output. If isolation is introduced, create another record for the visible instance. Do not attribute the companion display card performance or memory to A800.

The evidence to retain

Keep an ordinary qualification record with the actual test outputs.

Identify the tested variant, software build and execution mode before entering observations. Leave unavailable measurements explicitly unknown.

The fields below separate published specifications from observed allocation and job completion, so a later operator can repeat the same case.

Evidence fieldWhat this profile must retain
Hardware identityNVIDIA A800 40 GB Active; physical variant and reported device identifier
Memory boundary40 GB published; observed free memory before and after loading
Inference artifactExact weights digest, quantization, context and offload configuration
Render artifactScene digest, renderer version, backend and denoising setting
System envelopeDriver, container/build digest, enclosure and cooling configuration
Completion evidenceApplication exit status, output validity and observed memory failures

A companion display GPU can appear first in device enumeration; selection evidence must show that the 40 GB compute board actually ran the job.
