# Micron: Shipping an SSD for KV cache does not make storage behave like HBM

Micron’s KV-cache SSD shipment update followed Gen6 storage production. Why the useful inference role is managed state reuse rather than replacing HBM by capacity.

Micron’s September report connected named SSD shipments to KV-cache applications. That wording reflects a change in what AI storage is expected to hold: not only model files, but potentially state worth reusing. The earlier production milestones explain the hardware path; the application still supplies the reason for reuse.

## From producing a device to naming its role

The March and June updates established production context for newer SSD products. September added an application-specific description involving KV cache. The retrospective shift is from the existence of storage hardware toward a proposed position in the inference state hierarchy. That position does not follow from interface generation alone. A faster storage interface may change a transfer budget, but the workload determines whether saved state is requested again and whether retrieving it is preferable to doing the computation anew.

## A cache entry has an economic lifetime

An illustrative repeated-prefix workload can create state that is useful across later compatible requests. Retaining it introduces writes, metadata and later reads; rebuilding it introduces computation. The relevant comparison includes the probability and timing of reuse, not only the size of the retained object. A state item that expires unused has consumed resources without avoiding recomputation. This reasoning explains why storage can become an inference component, but it is not a measured break-even result for the products in Micron’s report.

## Storage capacity does not imply active-memory behavior

Placing more state on an SSD does not make every access equivalent to accessing accelerator memory. The complete path includes software lookup, movement and integration with the serving runtime. A workload with little compatible reuse may gain little from a large retained cache. Another could preserve useful state while still being constrained by transfer scheduling. Those possibilities require workload-specific evidence. The announcement’s shipment language establishes a product and application direction, not latency parity with HBM or a universal substitution rule.

## Why the historical connection matters

If AI serving stored only durable model files, the storage discussion would largely concern loading and persistence. Reusable inference state creates a different relationship between storage and active requests. The earlier production milestones made the hardware path more concrete; the September description shows the intended application moving closer to the serving loop. For a provider, a meaningful evaluation would track state retained, state reused, movement cost and work avoided. It would also describe cache misses, because a successful reuse example cannot represent the whole request distribution.
