Choose between vLLM and Ollama according to how the model will be operated. A personal workstation experiment emphasises convenient model management and understandable process control. A shared serving workload also needs memory, queueing, observability and reproducible deployment. Neither engine is universally faster without a matched workload.

## Define who operates the model

Identify who starts it, how many users submit requests and what happens after a restart. A local assistant and a dedicated GPU API have different requirements even when they use the same card. Include model storage, recovery time and diagnostic responsibilities in the decision.

Ollama provides its own model-management workflow and local API. vLLM exposes server and engine controls for online serving. These are practical differences to investigate, rather than grounds for claiming that one project is better at every task.

## Compare the operating work

| Criterion | Ollama emphasis | vLLM emphasis |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Initial setup | Manage models through its commands | Choose a checkpoint and server settings |
| Memory checks | Placement, context and concurrency | Engine budget, cache and scheduling |
| Reproducibility | Version, model tag and parameters | Version, checkpoint and serve command |
| Acceptance test | API and the intended workload | API, metrics and serving benchmark |

These are working emphases, not claims that the other tool lacks a feature. Verify the exact model architecture and accelerator for the installed release. One project's model catalogue cannot automatically be transferred to the other.

## Match the artifacts before timing

If Ollama uses a quantized artifact while vLLM uses weights at another precision, the result compares complete configurations. It is not a clean engine-only experiment. Record the exact variant, quantization, chat template, output limit and actual answer lengths.

Identical prompt text does not guarantee identical tokenization or stopping behaviour. Check useful answer quality on several examples before comparing resource use. A change in accuracy or formatting can matter more than a small timing difference.

## Test state management and concurrency

Compare the first request after launch, a repeated request and a request after idle time. Ollama's retention settings and a vLLM server's startup procedure affect different parts of that timeline. Do not present a convenient warm request as the whole user experience.

Then add several independent clients while keeping the test corpus fixed. Record quality, memory, latency and manual operating effort for each configuration. If a model or required function is unsupported, state that specific limitation. A useful pilot ends with two reproducible configuration cards rather than an invented universal leaderboard.

## Turn the check into a practical next step

Choose the engine for a documented workload and support process. A fair comparison records the complete model artifact and operating conditions, not just the engine name.
