A vLLM reasoning parser separates generated text into reasoning and final-answer fields. It does not automatically enable a model's thinking mode. Acceptance therefore needs ordinary and streaming boundary tests as well as explicit reasoning-control settings. Otherwise, a client may display control text as an answer or lose the beginning of useful content after a template or parser change.

## Separate generation from extraction

The model generates a token sequence; the parser interprets its structure. The [vLLM documentation](https://docs.vllm.ai/en/stable/features/reasoning_outputs/) distinguishes reasoning parsing from thinking-mode control. A missing reasoning field consequently does not, by itself, establish a GPU problem or the absence of reasoning behavior. Check the format expected by the selected parser against the actual model output first. Inserting a marker manually cannot substitute for compatibility among the architecture, template, and generation settings, particularly where the response begins without an explicit opening delimiter.

## Specify the client contract

Identify which fields the client consumes and which text it displays. Document whether empty reasoning is allowed, whether the opening marker can be absent, and how streamed events are assembled. The [serve reference](https://docs.vllm.ai/en/stable/cli/serve/) defines reasoning-parser selection. Store its name and engine version with the model configuration. A parser plugin adds another versioned component: its code and revision belong in the release contract because a public API model identifier cannot describe or restore changes to that implementation.

## Test a boundary explicitly

Prepare a short question and preserve the raw output, parsed object, and assembled streaming result. This diagnostic triple validates representation, not reasoning correctness. Check whether the first content characters disappear after a closing marker or whether a marker leaks into displayed text. Repeat with an answer whose reasoning is absent or minimal. A failure limited to that branch can expose an incorrect assumption that every response necessarily contains the same opening prefix. Keep the exact request with each recorded result.

## Validate effort independently

A `reasoning_effort` value needs a documented mapping to the particular model's capabilities. Do not assume that accepting a string proves that computation changed. Check supported values and template options for the selected parser. Compare a request without effort with one using an explicitly supported value while keeping other settings fixed. If the deployment controls a thinking-token budget, test its termination separately. An output-budget ending should not be mistaken for failed field extraction or an accidentally truncated stream.

## Retain useful fixtures

Cover a complete response, absent reasoning, a streaming boundary, and a continued conversation. Record expected fields, permitted empty values, and completion conditions. Do not judge structural acceptance by how persuasive the reasoning text sounds. Repeat the fixtures after changing models even if the parser name stays the same, because control tokens and templates can differ. The report should identify whether the model emitted an unexpected structure, the parser split it incorrectly, or the client assembled events incorrectly. This localizes the failure without inventing reasoning-quality conclusions from one answer.
