Vercel AI Gateway combines model calls through a managed interface. It can reduce separate integrations and bring usage into one place. Treat it as part of client architecture rather than a promise to connect third-party hardware to sales.

Documentation checked on November 1, 2026 describes compatible APIs and AI SDK integration. Models and features change, so fix the particular model, route and required capabilities in a working decision.

## Choose the application interface

[SDKs & APIs](https://vercel.com/docs/ai-gateway/sdks-and-apis) describes integration options. Compare them with streaming, structured output, tools and modalities the application actually uses. A similar request shape does not prove support for every special parameter.

Use a small set from the current application. Test ordinary output, invalid parameters and an interrupted stream. Identify supplier-specific fields before changing the API address rather than discovering them after migration.

## Define executor requirements

Model and provider selection differ. Establish acceptable model quality and functions, then executor restrictions. Check policy during fallback and when no eligible target remains.

[Provider Options](https://vercel.com/docs/ai-gateway/models-and-providers/provider-options) describes this configuration layer. If the primary is unavailable and an alternative has different latency, record what changed and whether the result remains acceptable to users. A successful response alone does not answer that question.

## Check credentials

[Authentication & BYOK](https://vercel.com/docs/ai-gateway/authentication-and-byok) distinguishes gateway authentication from customer provider credentials. A financial estimate needs the actual credential route and the location of final billing. Application placement does not automatically determine key type.

Identify what the gateway needs, where secrets live and who can change them. Test records should contain credential identifiers rather than their secret values.

## Measure the cost of convenience

Collect complete latency, successful results and usage on the same tasks. Include team setup and support time. Managed operation may reduce internal maintenance, but evaluate your process rather than importing promotional metrics.

Check additional-feature charges and plan suitability. A statement about token pricing does not describe every cost. Preserve applicable terms with the pilot decision and revisit them when functions change. Keep results alongside source requests and policy so another developer can repeat the checks after a model update without reconstructing conditions from messages and screenshots.

## Role in a GPU-pool project

Consuming models through Vercel does not establish automatic sales from any machine.
