Vast.ai hosting setup should begin with a record of the machine and its operating conditions. Collect the configuration, existing workloads and site restrictions before installing hosting software. This makes the preparation work reviewable and helps protect tasks already running on the host.

A spare GPU does not necessarily mean an empty server. Research data, background services and other users may still depend on the operating system. Treat those dependencies as part of the resource assessment.

## Record the hardware and current environment

List GPU models, device count and memory per card, followed by CPU, RAM, storage and operating system. Date the record and assign a stable internal name to each machine. Avoid publishing passwords, private keys or unnecessary serial numbers.

Vast.ai separates host preparation from subsequent operation. A precise configuration is more useful than describing a computer as powerful. NVIDIA Container Toolkit also has prerequisites; a working graphics driver alone does not establish compatibility with a marketplace's complete requirements.

## Separate observations from proposed changes

Record the installed driver, container runtime and active services. In a second column, identify what needs checking or changing. Keep the original observation even if the preparation plan changes later.

For each proposed change, identify who can approve it and how the earlier working configuration could be restored. Changing several unrelated components at once can make a later failure difficult to explain. A successful installation should have a specific acceptance check, rather than a broad claim that the entire server is ready.

## Describe the site and available schedule

Include connectivity, power, cooling and access for physical maintenance. Distinguish hours offered for external workloads from periods reserved for the owner. Known building maintenance or network restrictions belong in this initial record.

| Record | Evidence | Open question |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Machine | Dated configuration | Environment compatibility |
| Site | Power and network description | Response to lost connectivity |
| Existing data | Protected locations | Workload separation |
| Preparation | Agreed test window | Recovery procedure |

This is a proposed working format, not proof that Vast.ai has approved the machine. Eligibility and operational requirements must be checked against the platform and account involved.

## Define a bounded next step

Assign an owner and expected result to every outstanding check. For example, confirm that a test container can access the intended GPU, then retain the result and environment version. An unresolved check should produce a clear question, not an unrecorded sequence of installations.

An initial discussion does not require a finished marketplace installation. The practical connection format depends on the hardware and subsequent assessment.
