# RAM and VRAM: which memory matters for an AI server?

Distinguish host system RAM from GPU device memory and document an AI server without incorrectly combining them into one memory-capacity figure.

“A server with lots of memory” does not establish language-model suitability. It may mean system RAM, graphics-card memory or several devices added together. Precise specifications prevent misunderstandings and excessive expectations for equipment owners.

## Record two resources separately

RAM is host memory used by the CPU and system software. In an ordinary GPU server, VRAM is accelerator memory used by its compute environment. Physical organisation can differ, so inspect the actual device and access method.

The [accelerated EC2 summary](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/ec2/latest/instancetypes/ac.html) lists host and accelerator resources separately. Use the same structure for your machine: server RAM, each card model and its memory on separate lines.

Add card count. GPUs do not become one device simply by sharing a chassis.

## Separate storage and execution

Model files reside on disk; startup loads data into the relevant memory. Execution needs request state and engine buffers as well as weights.

[Hugging Face documents KV-cache strategies](https://huggingface.co/docs/transformers/kv_cache) with different placement trade-offs. CPU-memory offloading does not establish latency identical to another placement.

“All of it fits in shared memory” therefore needs clarification: where are weights, where are requests processed and what transfers occur on each call?

## Map one model

For a hypothetical pilot, draw disk, RAM, VRAM and client answer as four blocks. Label startup loading and runtime transfers. A complex diagram is unnecessary; understandable resource boundaries matter.

Test a short request, long input and concurrent sessions. Preserve both memory types' usage and complete-response time. This separates VRAM shortages from host constraints.

If trouble occurs only during loading or updating, discuss that stage. A higher-VRAM card may not fix inadequate system RAM during preparation.

## Do not add gigabytes without architecture

Spanning devices requires software support and suitable connections. Aggregate capacity is inventory, not an automatic measure of speed or one operation's usable memory.

The same applies across servers. Another machine's RAM does not become local VRAM merely by joining a pool. Choose the distribution method, then test latency and resilience.

A funding partner therefore needs architectural justification. “More gigabytes” is insufficient without the verified task they enable.

## Create an equipment specification

Configuration suitability is established by testing a specific model, context length and concurrent workload.
