# OpenRouter BYOK pricing: separating the parts of the bill

Build an OpenRouter BYOK estimate that separates upstream inference, allowance, gateway fees, credit purchase fees and fallback usage.

OpenRouter BYOK cost combines model usage at your upstream provider with applicable OpenRouter terms. Bringing your own key does not make inference free. A reliable estimate must also identify whether a request used your credentials or the platform's shared capacity. The published figures below describe the terms checked on November 1, 2026.

## Separate the two accounting sources

When a request runs through your provider credentials, that provider bills model usage under your account and its own conditions. OpenRouter still performs routing and related gateway work. Record the upstream provider, model, credential source and the platform plan before estimating the full task.

A successful request to the intended provider brand does not alone prove BYOK was used. Preserve the observed route and reconcile the applicable upstream and OpenRouter records. Discounts negotiated upstream and a platform calculation based on list price are different accounting inputs.

## Apply the published allowance carefully

The checked pricing lists a monthly BYOK allowance of $25,000 in inference value at list price without an OpenRouter fee for Standard and Business. After that allowance, the published fee is 5% of equivalent request list-price value, deducted from credits. Enterprise terms are individual.

Check the current plan and applicable period before using those figures in a new estimate. The allowance is not an estimate of your provider invoice, and the platform fee is not the entire cost of the underlying inference. Keep usage before and after the allowance distinct.

## Include the cash cost of credits

| Component | Illustrative case after the allowance |
| --- | --- |
| List-price calculation basis | $1,000 |
| OpenRouter fee at 5% | $50 in credits |
| Upstream invoice | Separate, under provider terms |
| Additional features | Checked independently for the chosen plan |

Buying the credits also matters to a cash estimate. At the checked published platform-fee rates, Standard is 5.5% and Business is 8%. Obtaining $50 in credits for the illustrated fee therefore costs $52.75 or $54 respectively, before applicable taxes. Verify the funding conditions of your own plan rather than treating $50 of credits as a complete cash expense.

## Check fallback and the whole workload

If a request falls back to shared capacity, its accounting can differ from the intended BYOK route. Save routing settings and examine actual usage, particularly when your key is unavailable. Include input, output, retries and any enabled paid features in a bounded workload estimate.

This is an operational cost breakdown, not a promised return from GPU ownership.
